Eat in Kuta

eat: Easily as many restaurants and warungs as there are losmens. Go to different places for different specialties-the best vegetable soup at the Bamboo Den, Rp75 (also great enchiladas); best gado2 and nasi campur at the Post Office Restoran; best prawn salad at the Free Bar and Restaurant; best banana daiquiries at Poppies, etc. If you get misty for home some places serve toast and vegemite or peanut butter and honey sandwiches, Rp100 None of the food on Kuta is really first class; only in Sanur are there really fine (and expensive) restaurants. Even Kuta's better restaurants have their off-days. Some dishes, like 'vegetable pie', somehow get lost in the translation. 'Vegetable pie' could end up as just a pancake with vegies inside. For the cheapest food: fried tahu carts, Rp25-50; goose and noodle soup carts, Rp50; sweet mungbean soup, Rp10-25; baked corn, Rp25 per. The back lane warungs are good for the money, heaps of food. Most nasi campurs cost Rp150 in the warungs. Though it costs Rp2000 for a mediocre meal at Yasa Samudra's Restaurant, you can eat quite satisfyingly in the warungs out in front of it for Rp150. Buy big papayas for Rp125-150. Buy wedges of tempe (Rp10 each) in Kuta Market and take them to Dayu's or the Chinaman's on Poppies Lane and have them cook you up some fried rice. Several places prepare magic mushroom soups and omelettes, either the Rp500 strength, or if you just want to get a little bit disturbed, the Rp300 strength. The in place for breakfast is Allang's; also the very best jaffles, chili con came, and yoghurt. Lenny's is an exceptionally good seafood restaurant near the beach, but not for the impecunious: Rp1500 for a small tasty chicken lobster or Rp2000 for a large fish (big enough for two). Good service without them falling all over you. The best restaurant food is at Jenik's Poppies, which has become a singles pick up bar and a hangout for Indonesian pimps. Try fish and chips, Rp500, the fish chowder, Rp400, and Mexican dishes like bean tacos, Rp300. About one-third more expensive than the cheaper restaurants, Poppies plays the Ritz of Kuta. Mama's, right next door to the Tropicana, has the tastiest vegetarian smorgasbord going every evening; all you can eat for Rp300. Get there early before all the best dishes are snapped up. Sit out front and take in the street life. Tropicana has the best bean tacos and breakfasts. Both Tropicana and Perama's make the best deep pan apple pie and ice cream, Rp300.
They stay open late to cater for people who roll in after a heavy night of smoking. Drink tuak, Rp25 for a container full, in the warung on the same lane as the dance rehearsal platform (on the lane parallel to Kuta Beach Road) on the left-hand side going towards the beach. Spike your fruit juices with gin, rum or vodka, a cheap and refreshing buzz. For banana and pineapple pancakes, the best fruit salad and fruit juices, go to the last warung on the right on Kuta Beach Road going towards the sea; always crowded. Lasi Erawati's is the place for rye bread sandwiches and yoghurt drinks, etc. Kubu Krishna's for vegetable tempura, Rp200, four bowls of good food, can hardly finish it. Also Bombay curry and brown rice, potato salad, and loaves of wholewheat bread (Rp225). Best Australian jaffles (baked filled sandwiches) are at Ayu's Juice Shop on the main road, also for plain good cheap Indonesian food. Ayu's features a suckling pig supper including rice, soup, vegetables, fruit salad, tusk, eat your fill for Rp1000. Dayu's Warung, opposite Poppies Cottages, serves good tahu burgers, tasty vegetable salad and cheese sandwiches, Rp75. Drink beer from frosted glasses at The Pub ('Cares for you') near intersection of Kuta Beach Road and Legian Road; convivial, and the best location for peoplewatching.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
