Stay in Legian

Stay: There are about 30 losmens in and around Legian, some quite unique, tucked away in hard-tofind places. Legian Beach Hotel has luxurious facilities; Rp7500 singles, Rpl 5,000 doubles; Rp300 for outsiders to use the pool. Accommodation Sinar Indah is one of the quietest /osmens; Rp400 single, Rp600 double. Nice sea breeze and exactly on line with the US$20 a day Legian Beach Hotel, and just as adequate. Puspa Sari, JI. Laut, Rp500 or Rp600 single, Rp1000 double; a bungalow for four, Rp2000. This is the place for the socializers; lot of strays. Excellent food served, jaffles, ice drinks, etc. Has electricity and offers a package-deal of 'room, full board and motorcycle'. Mirabo is another central yet hidden losmen off the main Legian road and down a path through the rainforest. Off-season rates are as low as Rp500 double. Surrounded by jungle, you just hear the birds, insects and gekkos. Your things are quite safe here; constantly guarded. About 300 m from the highway down Gang Gereja (opposite Legian Beach Hotel Road) is Yudistira, a fine losmen that's usually empty, enclosed by bright green ricefields and coconut trees, very quiet, and only 200 m from a river. Arjuna Inn and Villa Inn are on the same lane. Play volley ball each afternoon at the beginning of the lane with the boys. Losmen Suratha, Rp300; very kind, Christian, the brother of the owner is a cop, the grandmother makes great flower arrangements, bubur hitam is served for breakfast. At Korti's losmen out in the cow paddocks, black rice pudding, bananas, toast and jam, plus coffee and tea anytime are included in the price of a room, Rp3-400 (a bargain!). Great service and it's halfway between the beach and the road. Pension Sukaharta is on the south side of Legian; Rp400 single, Rp600 double. Sits by itself, is close to the beach, and you can rent bicycles for Rp300 a day. north side of Legian: Three Brothers Inn, Rp400 single, Rp600 double with private bathrooms and a large garden; you can see the ocean. Ideally located, Legian Sunset Beach Cottages is about two km beyond Legian; units rent for Rp1500 double. But the guys who run it are obnoxious and someone gets something stolen practically every day. Also has a snack bar. Tama's has opened a new flash restaurant that will offer needed competition to Sunset Cottages. In the same area as Sunset Beach are the Roby Inn /only four rooms), and Made's, which are nearly as quiet. Blue Ocean has little bamboo huts, Rp700. Belgi's is another place, standard prices, many rooms; Belgi acts like a mother hen to single girls. The most isolated and remote losmens are beyond Sunset Cottages. Rent a bicycle to make Legian and Kuta more readily accessible. Kayu Aya's cottages, an enterprise which went bankrupt after the manager absconded with the funds, is about 2'S km beyond Legian; rent villas here for US$5-10 daily. The bar is deserted, dusty and gone to weed. There are other losmens even more remote charging standard prices; search for them. The last two losmens are in Petitenget, one hour's walk from Legian; an unreal area. One is called 'The Ricefield Losmen', Rp400 single or Rp600 double, but is highly in demand and often full

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
