PRAHU
The Bugis and Makassans are the most skilful boat builders and sailors
in Indonesia. Life is symbolized by sails. They don't use compasses or
sextants when they sail and claim they can smell coral reefs. Steersmen
sit outside the hull so if they fall asleep they'll plunge overboard instead
of crashing the prahu on a reef. There's little distinction between captain
and crew. Their prahus are usually forward tilting, square-bowed, have
great oar-like rudders and seven sails balooning from very high masts.
In a really big wind many of the larger prahus have to drop their gigantic
sails. Some of the cargo freighters rigged up like schooners weigh up
to 250 tons, they could measure 30 m from steam to stern and up to 15
m wide. Often there's a galley, a small shithouse hanging over the back,
and two rooms, fore and aft. In South Celebes there's a central rudder
but most other locales use one or two long heavy oars which trail astern.
Some prahus can sail as fast as 30 km an hour in a good wind. An ocean-going
two master with 7 sails can sail from Ujung Pandang to Jakarta fully loaded
with 4 tons of copra in only 5 days. Some 30 ton boats carry loads that
are heavier than the ship's deadweight. types of prahus: Some designs
reflect Portugese influence (palari) with giant rectangular sails. There
are many other kinds: pinisi with different sizes and number of sails,
jarangka and sande (big outriggers), etc. Racing prahus have one or two
outriggers and carry a remarkably large sail whose width is twice the
hull's length (8 m) and whose height is 20 times the beam. These very
fast wildflying one foot wide boats can turn in just a few secconds with
their outriggers clear out of the water. Under sail they have the grace
of a bird.

in Bali
we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between
two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists
of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided
in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The
former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still
considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely
purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated.
Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the
redemption of their souls.
