Emotions ran high at the 14th annual Cricket Hall of Fame’s Induction Ceremony as six individuals, including three former international cricket stars, Gundappa Viswanath of India, Joel “Big Bird” Garner of Barbados and Alvin Kallicharran of Guyana, were honored for their contributions to the development and growth of the sport. Unfortunately Kallicharran, who now lives in England, was not present to receive his award. It is learnt that he suffered a heart attack just days before the ceremony. For the second year in a row, Hartford's Riverside Cricket Club emerged victorious in the Cricket Hall of Fame's annual Six-a-Side tournament held at Keney Park over the Labor day weekend. A regular participant in the tournament, Riverside led by some big hitting from right-hand batsman Everton Nelson, swept aside all its opponents powering its way to victory without losing a match. Sir Garfield Sobers visits Cricket Hall of Fame
West Indian cricket legend Sir Garfield Sobers recently
paid a visit to the Cricket Hall of Fame facilities,
where he met and signed autographs for a few adoring
fans. Sir Garfield, a former inductee of the Hall
of Fame, was in Hartford with a Barbados Sports Tourism
team, that is touring the U.S. to promote the Sir
Garfield Sobers’ Youth International Cricket
Tournament, and to drum up support and assistance
from Caribbean nationals throughout north America
for the 2007 World Cup tournament, which is scheduled

Hall of Fame show off upgraded facilities

very enthusiastic group, which included Mayor Eddie Perez,
Deputy Mayor Veronica Airey-Wilson, Majority Leader in the
Hartford City Council, Elizabeth Horton-Sheff, Council member
Kenneth Kennedy, Windsor Councilman Lenworth Walker, and
a number of local businessmen and friends, got a first-hand
view of the recently refurbished Cricket Hall of Fame and
its original benefactor, the Sportmen’s Athletic Club,

Gibbs, former WI cricket star, visits Hall of Fame
Hartford’s Cricket Hall of
Fame was recently graced with the presence of former West
Indian cricket star, Lance Gibbs. The former world-class
spin bowler, Gibbs, was in Hartford during the Independence
holiday weekend, as a guest of the United States Cricket
Association at their Eastern Regional Tournament, which
was billed as a trial game that will lead up to the selection
of the U.S. team that will compete for a place in the 2007
cricket World Cup. The World Cup competition is scheduled
to take place in the Caribbean and the U.S. is reportedly
bidding to host some of the games. [Full Story]
