United Nations International Driver's PermitThe United Nations International Driver's License (Document) allows a motorist to travel with confidence in any foreign country subscribing to the UN accord of Sept 19, 1949. Accompanying the card is a translation card with the text in the official languages of the United Nations, as well as German and Arabic.
The UNIDP is easy to obtain, with no tests or examinations required. The card is only valid when used in conjunction with your existing driver's license.
The Driver's License supplied by UNIDP is comprised of the core document, plus 4 separate cards with translations, to be carried with the core document to suit the country of travel. The Core Document is incredibly detailed in design, with various security features to prevent unauthorised tampering and copying.
UNIDP maintains a Secure License User File, which can be queried to return the entire record of the cardholder.
1. Many states do not subscribe to the AAA form of International Driving Licences, and the UNIDP provides those living outside the USA with a solution to this problem. You may only obtain an IDL from the AAA with a valid American Licence.
2. The UN IDP provides an invaluable and accurate translation of your original licence, to be shown to law authorities in case of emergency etc. The IDP allows the holder to assert their right to drive in the state in question, when the cardholder has a valid driving licence from their country of origin.
3. Some 170 countries will not allow you to rent a motor car without producing
an IDL. This card solves that problem easily and effectively.
4. As the UNIDP is a translation of your existing, valid license, there are no tests or examinations required to obtain one.
5. The IDP allows you to prove positively your identification. When produced in conjunction with your existing licence, it will allow the person demanding such proof to understand your native document.

The U.S. State Department recently issued a statement through their "Tips for Foreign Travel" brochure, stating that more and more countries prefer drivers travelling in their countries to carry an IDL as an accompaniment to their U.S. state-issued license.
