San Lucas Weekly Fishing Report
PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT
MARCH 19TH TO 25TH,
2004
BILLFISH: An update from
last week; the 600 lb blue marlin that was being fought at
the close of last report, aboard “Adriana” is still out
there. After a five and a half hour battle, the fish broke
the line and got away, leaving a very sore angler behind. We
had pretty strange weather this week – on the 20th
and 21st it was very hot, more like late May than
March and we got some good action on striped marlin as well
as other gamefish. On the 20th, pretty much every
boat had at least one striped marlin and most landed tuna or
dorado too. Nick and Clive Smith, both Brits, were aboard
“Rebecca” this day and were kept busy releasing a striped
marlin and boating four tuna 60 to 80 lbs and four dorado,
40 to 50 lbs. Next day out “Rebecca” was the hot boat again,
this time releasing four striped marlin for Michael Laramie
and friends. The Brits were lucky this week, as we had
another couple from England who fished on “Andrea” this
same day (Paul Lawrence) who managed to release three
striped marlin. The following day continued to be good for
marlin with most boats releasing a couple apiece, but it
wasn’t to last. A cold front descended on Cabo, with strong
winds and chilly air and catch rates dropped, with just a
few marlin being spotted, tuna however took up the slack.
Our overall catch success rate this week was eighty-four
percent, with thirty-seven of charters catching marlin.
Pisces anglers caught a total of thirty-three striped
marlin, with all but one being released.
OTHER SPECIES: Good tuna catches
this week, with one hundred and sixteen for us. The largest
was a 100 lb’er caught aboard “Catch n Carey” on a marlin
lure, 6 miles out from the 95 spot by Bill Barkshire. Other
fish weighed from 20 to 80 lbs, with the average being 35
lbs. boats caught anywhere from two to sixteen in a day and
there were several schools, all on the Cortez side-
thirty-seven percent of boats got tuna. Dorado catches were
fair, with twenty-seven percent of charters landing fish in
the 15 to 60 lb class, with the average being around 30 lbs
too. Boats caught from one to five with the average catch
being two fish. Just one wahoo for us this week, caught by
Billy Daughdrill from Pensacola, Florida. Inshore quite a
few skipjacks, some sierra, snappers and a few roosters.
LOCATION: Chileno to Punta Gorda,
10 to 30 miles off shore, on the Cortez side.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Hot and sunny,
then turning cool and windy, seas on the rough side, now
smoothing out.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 70-72 F
BEST LURES: Still a lot of squid
in the area, so live bait didn’t always work, red/brown,
pink/.blue, guacamaya.
