Fàilte
Eire.
Welcome to Ireland and Northern Ireland. Discover
the magic of this ancient and beautiful land--by boat, on foot, by bus,
and by bicycle--from County Cork in the south to Belfast in the north.
Then, once you've lost your heart to the people of this remarkable island,
explore the possibilities of building peace in Northern Ireland.
Orientation in Cork
An old Gaelic saying goes: "There are no strangers
in Ireland, only friends you have never met." You quickly discover just
how friendly the Irish are as you and your group spend three days in Cork
getting to know the country and its people. Ireland's rich culture and
history unfold before your eyes as you wander through narrow streets and
get the Irish "gift of the gab" at beautiful Blarney Castle.
Travel
and Discovery
After orientation, you and your group explore the
stunningly beautiful Irish countryside. Walk the hills and kayak throughout
the picturesque County Clare or hike and bike around the Gaelic-speaking
Aran Islands. Around the campfire, talk about your adventure, upcoming
homestay, and peace studies project in Belfast.
Sample activities: Visit dramatic Slea Head Cliff; explore Gallarus
Oratory, built in the eighth century; walk the beautiful sandy beach at
Inch; see the Cliffs of Moher; and roam the Aran Islands.
Homestay
Live for a week with an Irish family in a small town.
Although you speak the same language, you may find that it is not so easy
to roll the unfamiliar names right off the tip of your tongue. This tiny
republic has nurtured so many of the world's finest writers--Yeats, Synge,
Joyce, O'Casey, Shaw, Wilde, Swift--you soon realize that the Irish aren't
just talkers; they are storytellers. The stories pull you into your host
family's joys, traditions, and values. You may even find you have stories
of your own to share.
Sample host communities: Carlow, Carrigaline, Catlebar, Galway,
Castleisland, Tuam
Sample
activities: Take a day-trip to kiss the Blarney Stone at a sixteenth-century
castle; discover Mizen Head and the sheer cliffs of the southern tip of
the Emerald Isle.
Peace Studies and Community Service in Belfast
Spend two weeks in Belfast and Northern Ireland, where
you are welcomed by members of community-based organizations committed
to reconciliation. Here, you work with other students, Protestant and
Catholic, to help build a peaceful future. Representatives from political
organizations, members of local government, and community leaders open
your eyes to the complexities and varying perspectives surrounding the
history of the conflict. Through theater, games, excursions, lectures,
and community projects, you contribute to the important task of building
a more peaceful future. Venture south to explore Dublin and complete your
Irish adventure.
| The greatest part of the program was the community
service project in Belfast. We learned so much about the history
of the conflict in Northern Ireland. Working with the young Catholic
and Protestant kids gave me hope that future generations might find
peace.
