Challenge: Speedtv.com, the online brand of cable television channel Speed Channel, was looking to extend its brand into wireless and develop new revenue opportunities via its web site. Providing its site visitors with the opportunity to receive text messages to their wireless devices (mobile phones, PDAs, pagers, etc.) through a subscription service appeared to be a leveraging opportunity.
Approach: RMG3’s technology and content experts worked with Speedtv.com to identify the appropriate product mix, including Stock Car and Open Wheel (and alerts based on specific drivers/race teams), to integrate with the channel’s television programming and interests of its core consumers. The service was integrated with Speedtv.com through promotional elements carrying the Speedtv.com “style.”
Result: Text Messaging at Speedtv.com launched in the second half of the 2002 race season. Speed Channel renewed its contract with RMG3 at the end of the race season, for 2003. Both parties are working on more ways to promote the service to Speed Channel consumers. The service is providing an ever-growing base of subscribers with their real time motorsports news needs: “what a great way to keep up on everything even when I can’t get online!”
