1996 Main Voyage - June

River Ouse (Yorkshire) to River Ure

Saturday 2nd June 1996

From Lendal Bridge, York to Boroughbridge arriving at 3:05 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 35 minutes. 20.38 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.01 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 274 hours 45 minutes total cruising time, 566.50 miles and 400 locks, averaging 3.52 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

After three days at York had a good trip up river. Had lunch on the way and saw several boats, including Becky. Saw a knigfisher. Had a walk round the town. A fine day with some cloud but long sunny periods.

River Ure to Ripon Canal

From Boroughbridge to Bell Furrows Lock arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 6.38 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 277 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 572.88 miles and 402 locks, averaging 3.52 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Mum, Dad and Beryl went to the shops in Boroughbridge while I filled with water and did the pump out (£6). Saw two kingfishers at Oxclose lock and two oystercatchers on the way up. turned at the Ripon Motor Boat Club and backed up to the visitor's moorings above the next bridge. After lunch we walked into Ripon and came back by taxi. A sunny start to the day gave way to cloud and some light rain in the afternoon.

Ripon Canal to River Ure

Monday 4th June 1996

From Bell Furrows Lock to Newby Hall Landing arriving at 10:05 am. The time taken was 1 hours. 2.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 278 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 575.63 miles and 403 locks, averaging 3.52 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Saw a kingfisher and two oystercatchers on the way down to Newby Hall. Went round the garden and house before lunch and round the gardens again after lunch.

River Ure

Moored oposite two other narrowboats, Emma and Water Wanderer. A warm sunny day with some cloud.

Beryl and Mum did some shopping in Borougbridge, we filled with water (next to Emma from Sheppley Bridge) then set off. Saw a kingfisher on the way down and had lunch on the move. Moored at the museum and went round the Art Gallery. A warm day with some sun and showers but mostly cloudy.

From Lendal Bridge, York to Naburn Locks arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 1 hours 30 minutes. 6.00 miles and No locks, averaging 4.00 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 285 hours 15 minutes total cruising time, 605.63 miles and 406 locks, averaging 3.55 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Beryl and I went shopping at Sainsbury's while Mum and Dad went into town and round the Jorvik Museum. Stopped at Naburn Marina for diesel (£18.18 for 95.6 litres). Moored just above the lock. A hot day with sunshine and light cloud.

River Ouse (Yorkshire) to Aire & Calder Navigation - Selby Section

Thursday 7th June 1996

From Naburn Locks to Selby Lock No 4 arriving at 4:20 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 13.50 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.54 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 288 hours 40 minutes total cruising time, 619.13 miles and 408 locks, averaging 3.56 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Met some people from Peterborough (Crowland) who were on the camp site by Naburn Lock. Went through the lock at 12.55 with three cruisers and a small boat called Grace. Out of the lock at 13.25 and arrived outside Selby lock at 15.30 but had to stem the tide outsid the lock while the first two cruisers went through. A warm sunny day but some showeers in the early afternoon.

Aire & Calder Navigation - Selby Section

Friday 8th June 1996

From Selby Lock No 4 to Burn Bridge arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 45 minutes. 2.50 miles and No locks, averaging 3.33 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 289 hours 25 minutes total cruising time, 621.63 miles and 408 locks, averaging 3.56 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Did some shopping at Safeway and went round the town and Selby Abbey. Had drinks and cake and set off. Stopped at the Anchor moorings and got a round of drinks to have with our rolls, which we ate on the cratch table.

Aire & Calder Navigation - Selby Section to Aire & Calder Main Line

From Burn Bridge to Bank Dole Junction arriving at 5:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 9.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.34 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 293 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 630.88 miles and 411 locks, averaging 3.55 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

The water on the Aire was higher than usual with over a foot rise on Haddersley Flood Lock and little rise on Beal Lock. Moored just before Low Eggborough. A warm sunny day with some occasional breezes.

Aire & Calder Main Line

Saturday 9th June 1996

From Bank Dole Junction to Whitley Lock No 11 arriving at 9:35 am. The time taken was 1 hours. 4.00 miles and 1 locks, averaging 5.00 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 294 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 634.88 miles and 412 locks, averaging 3.56 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Went through the lock with a superanuated motor barge. Stopped for water and refreshment below the lock.

From Whitley Lock No 11 to Rawcliffe Bridge arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 9.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4.10 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 296 hours 35 minutes total cruising time, 644.13 miles and 413 locks, averaging 3.56 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Went through Pollington Lock with a narrowboat. Moored with other boats on the Black Horse visitor moorings and had our rolls with drinks from the pub.

At Rawcliffe Bridge

Had a trip down to Goole and back. Saw a container liner coming out of Ocean Lock and tom Puddings and lift. A lot of large barges and ships, many in a poor condition. Came back to the Black Horse moorings for the night. Had dinner in the pub (2 plaice, 1 lamb chops, 1 Gammon £14.05 the lot). A fine sunny day with a breeze at times.

Aire & Calder Main Line to Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation

Sunday 10th June 1996

From Rawcliffe Bridge to Sir Frank Price Lock No 5 arriving at 5:15 pm. The time taken was 8 hours 25 minutes. 29.38 miles and 9 locks, averaging 4.56 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 306 hours 30 minutes total cruising time, 679.00 miles and 422 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Went through the lock and swing bridges on the New Junction Canal with a cruiser from Thorne. Had a pump out in Long Sandall Lock (£5). Had lunch on the move. A very nice wooded stretch of river between Sprotbrough and Conisbrough. A mainly cloudy day with some showers but sunshine later in the day.

Monday 11th June 1996

From Sir Frank Price Lock No 5 to Rotherham Flood Lock No 4 arriving at 9:40 am. The time taken was 25 minutes. 1.38 miles and 1 locks, averaging 5.70 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 306 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 680.38 miles and 423 locks, averaging 3.60 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Set off beind Andromeda and stopped just before the lock while she went shopping and he talked. I was rescued by being called in for coffee.

From Rotherham Flood Lock No 4 to Sheffield Basin arriving at 2:30 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 10 minutes. 6.25 miles and 14 locks, averaging 4.86 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 311 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 686.63 miles and 437 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Went up the first two locks with Andromeda but at Holmes lock Persistence was waiting so we went up behind them and Andromeda assisted by the lock keeper. Beryl and Dad working the locks. A cloudy wet day.

Wednesday 13th June 1996

From Sheffield Basin to Sprotbrough Bridge arriving at 3:50 pm. The time taken was 7 hours 5 minutes. 17.88 miles and 20 locks, averaging 5.35 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 318 hours 10 minutes total cruising time, 704.50 miles and 457 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

After filling up with water set off and went through the locks with Persistence from Brigg, very friendly people. Had lunch on the move and went down to Sprotbrough, sharing the last two locks with Yeoman as well. All three of us moored here and Dad fell in as he was trying to take the rear rope ashore. Went to the Boat Inn in the evening. A mostly sunny day.

Thursday 14th June 1996

From Sprotbrough Bridge to Doncaster Town Lock No 12 arriving at 9:30 am. The time taken was 1 hours. 3.38 miles and 2 locks, averaging 5.38 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 319 hours 10 minutes total cruising time, 707.88 miles and 459 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.
Went through the locks with Yeoman and the wide boat Eden. Moored on the Waterways Office moorings and took Mum and Dad to the station. Went shopping in the town centre, Beryl got some new trainers, and then on to Tesco's. When we returned to the moorings Persistence had arrived.
Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation: Between Mexborough Low Lock No 10 and Sprotbrough Bridge Narrowboat - June 1996

From Doncaster Town Lock No 12 to Barney Dun Lift Bridge arriving at 2:50 pm. The time taken was 1 hours 20 minutes. 5.63 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4.97 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 320 hours 30 minutes total cruising time, 713.50 miles and 460 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped for water just through the bridge.

Stopped opposite the BW yard as all the moorings were full. Saw a cormarant on the river. A hot sunny day.

Friday 15th June 1996

From Thorne bridge to Wykewell Lift Bridge arriving at 10:15 am. The time taken was 20 minutes. 0.88 miles and No locks, averaging 2.63 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 323 hours 15 minutes total cruising time, 720.50 miles and 462 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

After posting the mail and ringing the mobile phone people about the hands free cradle we set off but were stopped at thee first swing bridge as it had been out of order since 3.30 pm tthe previous day. The community barge Sobriety was waiting and two cruisers. Waterways men were trying to mend it but it was after lunch befoe we could proceed.

From Wykewell Lift Bridge to Keadby Lock No 17 arriving at 3:00 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 9.00 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4.62 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 325 hours 25 minutes total cruising time, 729.50 miles and 463 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Once the bridge was working we started off, accompanied by two cruisers and the n.b. Elizabeth of York. With the swing bridges being worked by the crew of each boat in turn we made good time to Keadby. Went down to the lock with the man from EoY but we had to go back again at 16.00 as the lock keeper was off until then. Arranged a passage for 17.00.

Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation to Chesterfield Canal

From Keadby Lock No 17 to Stockwith Bridge No 85 arriving at 7:50 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 12.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4.71 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 328 hours 20 minutes total cruising time, 742.25 miles and 464 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Set off at 16.55 and went through the swing bridge into the lock. Had a wait while the tide was turning and left the lock at 17.30. Followed Elizabeth of York up the river and turned just before the lock to drift back with the tide to the lock entrance. This did not work too well for us as we got too close into the bank and could not get out. A hot and sunny day.

Chesterfield Canal

Saturday 16th June 1996

From Stockwith Bridge No 85 to Hayton Low Bridge No 66 arriving at 5:05 pm. The time taken was 6 hours 30 minutes. 11.38 miles and 4 locks, averaging 2.37 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 334 hours 50 minutes total cruising time, 753.63 miles and 468 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Filled up with water, disposed of the rubbish and got a new cylinder of gas (£10.60) from the lock keeper. A good trip up, lovely scenery but a lot of anglers and very few moorings. Had lunch on the move and stopped at the Boat Inn and had dinner (Salmon Steak £5.45, Turkey from cavery £4.95). A hot and sunny day.

Sunday 17th June 1996

From Hayton Low Bridge No 66 to Forrest Locks Nos 54 to 57 arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 7.88 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.18 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 337 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 761.50 miles and 473 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped for lunch on a mooring just before lock 55. Met a dredger near the aqueduct at Retford.

From Forrest Locks Nos 54 to 57 to Chequer House Bridge arriving at 3:45 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 1.00 miles and 2 locks, averaging 1.38 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 340 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 762.50 miles and 475 locks, averaging 3.64 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Had some trouble with the engine temprature warning coming on intermitently, although the water temprature guage seemed OK. Stopped and checked oil and water, seemed OK. Progress very slow - shallow and weedy. Passed a BW weed clearing boat. Moored next to the Chequers pub. A mostly sunny day, not quite as hot as yesterday.

Monday 18th June 1996

From Chequer House Bridge to Worksop Town Lock No 50 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 4 hours 30 minutes. 5.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 1.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 344 hours 35 minutes total cruising time, 767.75 miles and 478 locks, averaging 3.62 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

A long haul up the canal, slowed and stopped by the blanket weed. Had to bow haul the boat over a stretch just before Kilton Lock (No 52). Stopped at the Canal Tavern for lunch (Cheese salad cob 75p, Toasted cheese and tomato sandwich with salad, beans and chips £2). Went shopping in the town and found that Canal & Riverboat had published my second article. Did food shopping at the Coop supermarket.

At Worksop Town Lock No 50

Went up to the end of the navigable section and turned and came back down through the lock. Filled with water then moored. A mostly sunny day but cooler than yesterday.

Tuesday 19th June 1996

From Worksop Town Lock No 50 to Chequer House Bridge arriving at 12:05 am. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 5.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 2.48 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 349 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 773.00 miles and 481 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

A slow trip down through the blanket weed. Bow hauled the boat from Kilton Lock to near Manton viaduct. Moored at the Chequers and had lunch on the boat.

From Chequer House Bridge to Forrest Locks Nos 54 to 57 arriving at 4:05 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 1.50 miles and 4 locks, averaging 2.00 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 351 hours 50 minutes total cruising time, 774.50 miles and 485 locks, averaging 3.58 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored after Lady Bridge (54). A mostly cloudy bright day with moderate temperatures.

Wednesday 20th June 1996

From Forrest Locks Nos 54 to 57 to Retford Lock No 59 arriving at 9:25 am. The time taken was 1 hours 5 minutes. 3.63 miles and 2 locks, averaging 5.19 lock/miles per hour. Stopped just before the lock and went to Asda for our shopping.

From Retford Lock No 59 to Railway Bridge (Packet Inn) arriving at 6:05 pm. The time taken was 6 hours 50 minutes. 14.50 miles and 5 locks, averaging 2.85 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 359 hours 45 minutes total cruising time, 792.63 miles and 492 locks, averaging 3.57 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Had lunch on the move and moored for the night outside the Packet Inn. A sunny start to the day soon gave way to cloud. A cool breeze in the afternoon.

Thursday 21st June 1996

From Railway Bridge (Packet Inn) to Stockwith Bridge No 85 arriving at 9:30 am. The time taken was 20 minutes. 0.63 miles and No locks, averaging 1.88 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 360 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 793.25 miles and 492 locks, averaging 3.57 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moved down to Stockwith Basin for diesel (178 litres @ 19.8p = £35.24) and pump out (£6). The lock keeper (Lewis) said we could go through to Torksey at 10.30 so we did not have time to fill up with water as well. Saw the man from Elizabeth of York and had a chat.

Chesterfield Canal to Fossdyke Canal

From Stockwith Bridge No 85 to Torksey Lock arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 15.00 miles and 2 locks, averaging 7.56 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 362 hours 20 minutes total cruising time, 808.25 miles and 494 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Had a good trip up the Trent passed Easedale and another sand barge, as well as two cruisers, coming down. Stopped for lunch and water just after the lock, the water was nearly empty.

Fossdyke Canal

From Torksey Lock to Saxilby Bridge arriving at 3:00 pm. The time taken was 1 hours 25 minutes. 5.13 miles and No locks, averaging 3.62 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 363 hours 45 minutes total cruising time, 813.38 miles and 494 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

On our way up met a cruiser tthat had broken down (fractured diesel pipe) aand gave them a tow to Saxilby where we moored. Cloudy with some sunshine today but cooler.

Friday 22nd June 1996

From Saxilby Bridge to Lincoln, West end of Brayford Mere arriving at 11:50 am. The time taken was 1 hours 25 minutes. 5.38 miles and No locks, averaging 3.79 lock/miles per hour. Saw Wigford arrive and stopp briefly for shopping. Did some shopping in Saxilby then went on to the BW yard to fill up with water.

Moored in Brayford Pool for lunch . I went into the city but the Post Office was closed. A day of cloud and some sunny periods

Fossdyke Canal to River Witham Navigation

From Junction with River Witham to Bardney Lock No 2 arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 9.00 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.55 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 367 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 828.25 miles and 496 locks, averaging 3.60 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

After collecting the postand doing a bit of shopping in Kwik Save we set off. Saw a lot of Great Creasted Grebes on the way down. Stopped before the lock for water and lunch. Saw Sarah Homera (from Camden and Stanstead Abbots) just before the lock.

River Witham Navigation

From Bardney Lock No 2 to Kirkstead Bridge arriving at 3:45 pm. The time taken was 2 hours. 7.38 miles and No locks, averaging 3.69 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 369 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 835.63 miles and 496 locks, averaging 3.60 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Spent a quarter of an hour waiting to get into Bardney Lock as the large cruiser Anne was going down and another cruiser (bbased at Mount Sorrell) was coming up. The police frogmen were working just before Baardney Bridge. Passed two narrowboats coming up river (the second one waas Fox). Moored on the visitors moorings. Went to the Railway Hotel for a drink after dinner. Some cloud in the morning becoming increasingly sunny as the day prrogressed.

Monday 25th June 1996

From Kirkstead Bridge to Boston Grand Sluice Lock No 3 arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 15.88 miles and 1 locks, averaging 5.06 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 373 hours 15 minutes total cruising time, 851.50 miles and 497 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

A good trip down the river passing two cruisers coming up. Saw two oyster catchers, Great Crested Grebes and chicks, and some rabbits. Saw a lot of militay aircraft taking off nearTattershall Bridge, no doubt from RAF Coningsby. Moored on the visitor moorings and had lunch at the Witham Tavern (baked potato with tuna and mayonase £2.75, Ham Bagette £1.50). Went to the library and leftt a note for Priscilla then I went up the stump. A fine sunny day, hot in the afternoon.

River Witham Navigation to Maud Foster Drain

Tuesday 26th June 1996

From Boston Grand Sluice Lock No 3 to Cowbridge Lock Junction arriving at 2:00 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 55 minutes. 12.00 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.64 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 378 hours 10 minutes total cruising time, 863.50 miles and 498 locks, averaging 3.60 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Filled with water at Boston then went up to Anton's Gowt and through the lock into the Newham Drain. Went up Castle Dyke but couldn't get under the first bridge due to a low pipe on the far side. Had to back out and continue up Newham Drain under another very low footbridge near the junction. Then went down West Fen Drain to Cowbridge Lock. Went through the lock but got stuck just after the lock and couldn't get off. Had to call out a breakdown truck to tow us off.

Maud Foster Drain to River Witham Navigation

From Cowbridge Lock Junction to Anton's Gowt Junction arriving at 5:20 pm. The time taken was 1 hours 20 minutes. 2.25 miles and No locks, averaging 1.69 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 379 hours 30 minutes total cruising time, 865.75 miles and 498 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Came backwards through Cowbridge lock then along Firth Bank and through the lock onto the river. A fine sunny start to the day gave way to cloud with showers later.

Wednesday 27th June 1996

From Anton's Gowt Junction to Tattershall Bridge arriving at 11:45 am. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 9.38 miles and No locks, averaging 4.33 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 381 hours 40 minutes total cruising time, 875.13 miles and 498 locks, averaging 3.60 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Went up to the visitor moorings and washed the boat. After lunch I polished the boat and put some wood primer on the bottom of the cratch where the paint was flaking off. A cloudy bright day with some sun.

Thursday 28th June 1996

From Tattershall Bridge to Boston Grand Sluice Lock No 3 arriving at 9:40 am. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 11.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 5.28 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 384 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 886.88 miles and 499 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Set off early and Beryl had a bath on the way down. Two short narrowboats were on the pontoon so we moored across three of the jetties and went shopping at Kwik Save, then some other shops. A wet morning.

Friday 29th June 1996

From Boston Grand Sluice Lock No 3 to Tattershall Bridge arriving at 12:10 am. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 11.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 5.10 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 386 hours 35 minutes total cruising time, 898.63 miles and 500 locks, averaging 3.62 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Priscilla arrived about 9am and we had a drink and a chat then set off. A very cool and sometimes wet trip up river. Moored for a very good lunch aboard and some more chat.

From Tattershall Bridge to Boston Grand Sluice Lock No 3 arriving at 5:05 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 11.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 5.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 388 hours 50 minutes total cruising time, 910.38 miles and 501 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

The return trip was not so wet but not as bright as we had hoped. A grey day with some showers and rather cool.
