Released 3rd March 2003 by Jim Allen

The Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway Trust, in conjunction with its colleagues promoting the construction of the first all new waterway for nearly one hundred years, announced its final route decision today (28th February 2003).

The canal will join both town centres. This decision has been based on engineering and geographical reasons determined in a feasibility study carried out last year. In addition, the decision has been based on the exhaustive public consultation carried out by the Trust. Through the Trust, the public's opinions have been sought and considered. This decision shows that their wishes will be implemented.

B&MK; Trust Chairman, Ian Clifton said "I am thrilled that all our efforts to date have been vindicated. Many enthusiastic volunteers have worked tirelessly to ensure that the public has been fully informed of the options and been able to voice their opinions through the Trust. We now have a wonderful opportunity to improve Bedford's fortunes".

The new waterway will without doubt be a "jewel in the crown" for Bedford and Milton Keynes. The well-used linear park will extend eastwards from the Grand Union Canal through the Marston Vale, heading towards the River Great Ouse in Kempston. The waterway represents a huge asset for all as both a leisure facility and as a tourist attraction, estimated to bring in an annual turnover of £7.5million.
