Quality of Drinking Water
Water is treated by the water companies to make it safe for human consumption;
tests to ensure its quality are carried out daily by the water companies.
Drinking water contains various chemicals, safe levels of which have been
set and water companies must comply - their failure to do so could result
in prosecution. Each water company is inspected in two ways;
• Drinking water tests by the water companies are rigorously checked.
• Each water company is visited and operating practices are inspected.
England and Wales has an independent regulator – Drinking Water
Inspectorate, while in Scotland and Northern Ireland water quality remains
the responsibility of the government.
