Wild Rainbow/Steelhead Trout Initiative

Alaska's wild rainbow trout resources are intrinsically important to Alaskans, their quality of life, and the Alaskan economy. To ensure the sustainability of these resources, he has proposed an initiative with the following elements. The Department supports this initiative and we ask your opinion regarding these elements.

1. Ensure adequate water flows necessary to allow for movements, spawning, and rearing.
2. Protect critical streamside habitats and water quality
3. Ensure adequate food sources (e.g., insects, salmon eggs/flesh, stream organisms)
4. Gear considerations to reduce injury and mortality (e.g., single hook, barbless hooks, artificial lure only)
5. Well-funded agencies
6. Establish catch and release, single-hook artificial lure only regulations as the default for directed wild rainbow trout fisheries statewide with allowances for traditional and customary harvest and other special management (e.g., fly-fishing only waters).
