The topeng (mask) dance
performer, complete with his costume. |
Main
Attraction: Topeng (mask) dance
The most popular afternoon (matinee) entertainment,
especially with the more serious type of men, is the topeng,
a masked play dealing with the exploits of local kings and
warriors, episodes of the wars and intrigues of Balinese
history (babad). Two or three actors, usually aged men,
play all the parts and impersonate all sorts of characters
with great skill, from the half-witted servants and petulant
prime ministers, to the heroic kings and cultured young
princes. It was like magic to see an old man transform himself
into a graceful young prince simply by putting on a mask
and dancing with delicacy, only to come out again as a lisping
and idiotic clown.

Nyepi,
The Unique Balinese New Year ( March 2004)
Nyepi is the Balinese New year based on the Caka calendar (Balinese
own traditional calendar). It is strangely celebrated, unlike
our modern new years, with quiteness and silence amongst all others.
The holy day, to Balinese is a great day to reflect mistakes of
the past and a day to meditate and to approach the god almighty
himself (Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Waca). Balinese are not allowed
to travel, work, light fire, and talk while some fasting for 36
hours before and on the day. At this very day, if you happen to
fly above bali at night, the island itself is gone as though it
is sink to the bottom of the ocean.
