Greenhouse Gas Emissions Growth Has Slowed Since 1980

A new NASA-funded study shows that the rate of growth of greenhouse gas emissions has slowed since its peak in 1980.

The findings appeared in the December 18 issue of the proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in a paper co-authored by Dr. James Hansen of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies and Makiko Sato of Columbia University.

The paper attributes the diminishing growth rate of greenhouse gas emissions over the past 20 years to the international cooperation that led to reduced chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) use, slower growth of methane emissions, and a steady rate of carbon dioxide emissions. According to the study, the CFC phase-out was the most important factor.
