SKIING
Mount Washington
Alpine Resort is a local favourite. Just
30 minutes away, it features more than 50 trails that stretch over 55 kilometres
(30 miles) to satisfy your downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding
and snowshoeing ambitions. Enjoy our hot tub after a hard day on the snow.
Singing Sands B&B offers you a complimentary shuttle downtown to connect
with the bus up the mountain.
HIKING, MOUNTAIN BIKING & ECO-TOURS
If you miss the ski season, active hiking and
mountain biking trails are also a feature at Mt. Washington Alpine Resort.
Try Monster Mile Downhill, if you dare, or take a leisurely stroll around
Paradise
Meadows on the boardwalks.
Spend some time in the backcountry of Strathcona
Provincial Park , the oldest provincial park
in British Columbia. For those who want to exercise their muscles, plan
a 3-day backpacking trek to the Comox Glacier. For the not-so-energetic,
Seal
Bay Park is just 10 minutes away by car, with steps leading down to
the beach where you can view seals or go birdwatching in a marsh.
Helliwell Provincial Park, on
Hornby
Island, is a jewel to be experienced in any
season. A 5-kilometre (3-mile) walk circles the park and includes spectacular
bluffs. This is a day-use-only park and can be reached by driving 20 minutes
from Singing Sands to the ferry at Buckley Bay.
Note: The last ferry off Hornby Island is at 6 p.m.
Ocean Spoke Adventures offers
cycling and mountain bike tours. They have guided tours and also offer
bike rentals. Additionally, they operate marine wildlife tours or harbour
tours, and they have a door-to-door shuttle service from May to September.
You don't have to go far to see wildlife
around the Comox Valley. Our resident bald eagles can sometimes awaken
you early in the morning. Sea otters live at the local beaches, and sea
lions often swim lazily by, popping up just long enough to eyeball you.
The Comox Valley is on the edge of some of the most stunning wilderness
settings on Vancouver Island. Take a day trip north to see breathtaking
sights of Orcas and other whales, not to mention the porpoises, dolphins,
sea lions and seals. Adventures
Vancouver Island offers ocean kayaking, wildlife
viewing, photography tours and remote wilderness hiking. And you'll find
Stubbs
Island Whale Watching operating out of Telegraph
Cove, 3.5 hours north from Singing Sands Bed and Breakfast in Comox.
SAILING/KAYAKING
You may wish to bring your own kayak and launch
it on our beachfront to explore the bays and inlets of Georgia Straight.
If you prefer, Comox
Valley Kayaks or Tree Island Kayaking
(e-mail
) can also arrange lessons and rentals. For those with more extravagant
tastes, the magic of sailing comes alive aboard America's
Cup Yachts.
FISHING
Beachcasting for salmon is available just steps
from your door at the end of Singing Sands Road, or you may wish
to hire a boat and fishing tackle from
our neighbour, King
Coho Resort, which is within walking distance
of our B&B. The Comox Valley offers both freshwater fishing and sea
fishing to all enthusiasts. And Mark Hill, your host
at Singing Sands, would be happy to provide flyfishing
lessons and supply all the equipment you'll need.
DIVING
Another world awaits you beneath the surface
of the ocean. The West Coast of B.C. is home to some of the most incredible
sea life you'll see anywhere in the world, and Vancouver Island is becoming
better known all the time for its dive sites. You can enjoy inspiring sights
and wide open water just steps from your room at Singing Sands Bed &
Breakfast. The beach is right there at the end of Singing Sands Road. Or,
if you want to dive with the local experts, contact Pacific
Pro Dive Adventures.
MUSEUMS
The Comox Valley has a rich history, and people
here are proud of it. While you're in town, don't miss out on a chance
to stop by and visit the Courtenay
and District Museum and Paleontology Centre.
This area is also home to some of Canada's best
pilots and finest flying machines, thanks in large part to the presence
of CFB Comox. The Comox Airforce Museum celebrates the history
of both military and civilian aviation here on the West Coast.
This region's history has always been connected
to the land and its resources, from farming and fishing to logging and
mining. The Cumberland
Museum and Archives captures that history
well, most notably presenting the story of coal mining in the valley. There
is even a replica mine you can tour.
ARTS AND CRAFTS
From Aug. 1 to 4, 2003, more than 140 Canadian
artisans will descend on the Comox Valley to display their handmade wares
at the annual Filberg Festival.
One of the biggest festivals in the region, it draws visitors from all
across the continent. A must see!
Fans of traditional and modern Northwest Native
Art will be happy to discover IHOS
Gallery, featuring a range of top-quality
crafts and artwork.
The Comox Valley Art Gallery , located
on 4th Street in Courtenay, carries contemporary fine art by renowned and
emerging artists, giving visitors a unique opportunity to discover new
talent and find familiar favourites at the same time.
