Tipping It is common practice tot tip 5 to 10 percent in the more expensive restaurants. Taxi drivers do not have to be tipped but it is customary to round the meter amount as a tip. There is no extra charge for more than one person or for luggage. Hotel porters will expect a tip of around 2 or 3 percent of the cost of your room. Weather The climate in Istanbul is mild with temperatures never sinking below freezing, even in winter. In July the average temperature can lead up to 30 degrees Celsius. Banks Banks can be found on almost every corner in Istanbul. Normal business hours are 8.45am to 1.30pm and 2.45pm to 4.00 Monday to Friday. Currency The currency used in Turkey is the Turkish Lira (TRL). Notes come in denominations of 50,000; 100,000; 250,000; 500,000; 1,000,000 and 5,000,000 TRL and the coins in use are 5,000; 10,000; 25,000 and 50,000 TRL. Istanbul dress code The population has become accustomed to the casual way that many Westerners dress; however, there are still certain situations where it is advisable to dress in accordance with Islamic beliefs. When visiting mosques or holy sites, it is prudent to dress modestly and wear nothing that is too revealing and when entering a mosque, always take off your shoes. Local Customs Some body language will sometimes offend people in Turkey. Pointing at people is considered highly rude. Furthermore, do not show the soles of your feet or shoes, so that people can see them and avoid blowing your nose in public, especially in restaurants. Public displays of affection between sexes for example kissing, hugging and holding hands are frowned upon. |
