Home hosting has become a very popular form of personalised hospitality. Hospitality is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as "the friendly and generous welcome of friends or strangers" and it is the emphasis on friendliness and generosity which typifies home hospitality, (generosity of a host's time, energy and resources). Home hospitality began in UK and Europe (often commercially termed Bed & Breakfast) and was usually a room in someone's home where guests were treated courteously and generously. The concept of home accommodation has travelled the world, becoming increasingly popular and universally acceptable. In New Zealand home hosting has developed further into the commercial forms of Farmstay, Homestay, Countrystay and Citystay, where the availability of any meal and possible tourist entertainment is also offered. The traditions begun in Europe have been expanded by our national characteristic of friendliness and generosity coupled with the numerous rural activities so prevalent in our country. All guests welcomed into the homes of Association members are assured of an excellent experience with quality because members are conscious of the varying needs and challenges within this profession. Cultural and language barriers are quickly reduced and friendships are clinched in this intimate form of personalised accommodation. Citystays or homestays generally involve bed and breakfast with the availability of dinner on request. Countrystays and farmstays offer the tranquillity of the countryside with the optional associated activities as well as the home cooked meals. Home hosting is particularly popular with the international visitors who delight in meeting the locals and enjoying the family involvement incurred. Home hospitality does not appeal to all travellers. There are times when we all prefer the anonymity of a hotel or motel. But it is a very rapidly growing industry where more and more travellers, despite their cultural differences, realise the delights of being welcomed into a New Zealand home as a friend.

|
In 1986 the NZ Association came into being when the NZ Tourism Board asked for a group of interested parties to meet in Wellington, in order to discuss the problems associated with this important accommodation sector. Up to this point in time the industry lacked a national voice and unity coupled with the problem of varying standards throughout the country. A board of five members (i.e. two company operators, two individual hosts and a regional group co-ordinator) was constituted and a secretary supplied by NZTB. As a result of the 1998 annual conference there is now only one class of membership, that is individual membership from which the board of 5 members is elected at the AGM. There is now no separate category of membership and director for company operators or regional groups. After two years this service was withdrawn and the Association has annually elected its Executive Board Officers from its own members. One major benefit of the formation of this Association is that it has created a highly motivated and united Home Hosting sector within NZ tourism. The objects of the
Association are briefly: This fast growing sector of NZ tourism could easily become fragmented and weakened, particularly by regional dissonance. So, although it is not a marketing body nor a sales organisation, this Association plays a key role in maintaining national standards, regular communication between regions and attaining strong, professional values amongst hosts. It exists for the betterment of the industry and you, its hosts. Are you a member?
