Just like cell phone call packages, there is a wide selection of different
search engines with different advantages, methods of practice and payment schemes.
These can roughly be broken down in to two groups, ‘Paid Search Engines’ and ‘Free
Search Engines’.
Free search engines are exactly that, search engines to whom submissions are
free. Due to the network of information sharing between search engines and
the ‘spidering bots’ that crawl the web recording content from
web sites, it is possible to get in to a search engine without ever having
to submit to it. However, to be sure of a full search engine promotion campaign,
it is best to submit to the entire list of important search engines. The major
free search engines are Google, Altavista, Yahoo (web matches), Alltheweb,
Lycos, DMOZ, AOL, Netscape, Teoma, and Hotbot. Google is probably the most
important free search engine. Its results are used by many other search engines
such as Yahoo, Netscape, AOL and Teoma. In fact an estimated 80% of all internet
searches provide Google results in some form.

Paid search engines require some sort of payment to be listed with them. The
payment and listing methods are varied:
Pay For Inclusion – These search engines charge a fee to be listed with
them. Examples are Yahoo Directory, which charges an annual fee for inclusion
in its directory and Inktomi which charges an annual fee, per page, to be included
in its listings.
Many free search engines have a paid ‘express submissions’ process
prioritizing these sites in the submissions queue, increasing the speed with
which a site is added to their listings or reviewed by an editor.
Pay Per Click – This is a search engine that charges you a set fee
every time someone clicks on your site in their listings. Looksmart is the
most notable example of this. Looksmart charges you a set up fee for an account
and then you pre-pay for a pool of clicks. Every time someone clicks on your
site, 15c (US) is taken from that pool. When the pool runs out, your web
site listing is removed until you decide to top up the pool.
Bid For Click - A search engine that auctions positions in its listings under
specific key terms. The highest bidder receives the number one spot under the
chosen term. Overture is the most well known example. You start an account
with a pool of money. Every time your listing is clicked on, your bidding price
is deducted from your account. Bidding values can range from 10c per click
to some financial sites paying $30+ per click under certain keyterms.
