Lesson 3 : Step flashing installation

The Big Idea: Where any type of wall meets a shingle roof, step flashing often is the flashing method of choice. Flashing shingles are layered with each course of roofing shingles at the intersection.

A particularly critical place to flash correctly is the area where a wall meets the roof. In the case of a shingle roof, a flashing strategy called step flashing often is used. Metal flashing shingles are layered at each roofing shingle that terminates at the intersecting wall. Half of each metal flashing shingle carries up the intersecting wall, and the other half should extend over the roof deck, to guide water from the wall's drainage plane to the roofing paper.

The following Click Thru shows the details of step flashing installation, as well as the typical alternative to step flashing.
