What is NMATU?
The National Money Advice Training Unit trains staff from a wide range of private and public agencies. Its aim is to increase the quality and accessibility of money advice services across England and Wales.

A programme of training is provided at the Unit's base at Settlement House in Newtown in all important areas of money advice. In addition, the Unit provides in-house training for organisations at external venues, both locally and nationally. It is the only agency in the UK offering such a service.

Through professional, quality training at all levels NMATU aims to extend money advice skills to an increasingly diverse range of individuals and organisations, including staff from the voluntary sector, charities, churches, local authorities, the armed forces, the police, customs and excise, the inland revenue, government welfare departments, mortgage lenders and housing associations.

NMATU continues to provide handbooks and other materials to support its training programme and for sale nationally. These publications are recognised as leaders in their field. New editions of the Debt Counselling Handbook (11th edition) are available from NMATU at £9.95.

The Unit plays a key role in the national money advice strategy. It provides important input in the areas of standards, training content, and the planning and design of courses.

The Unit also undertakes research into new areas of money advice in response to the ever-changing needs of money advice clients and advisers, and is looking to continue the Settlement's long standing repuatation for innovation by moving into the area of adult finance literacy, education and advice.

Financial Literacy
Birmingham Settlement is now involved in several Financial Literacy projects. It is now recognised by the Government, the Financial Industry and more generally that it's not enough to provide services to deal with debt crisis - prevention and education are also vital.

Making Sense of Your Money Money and finance is an increasingly complex area. Failure to understand the changing world of money means that people frequently lose out or pay more than they should.

What is the Service about?
Making sense of your money is an information service which provides free and independent help on a wide range of money matters.

Who is the service for?

The service is targeted at a wide range of households with money queries including:
Families Retired people Tenants and homeowners Students and young people Those facing a life change due to redundancy or approaching retirement

What money topics are covered?

The service will give help and information about a broad range of money issues including:
Savings & investments Retirement planning and pensions Borrowing and lending terms Mortgage and Insurance Financial management Income maximisation and budgeting New government initiatives - Basic Bank Accounts and the Savings Gateway

Where will the information surgeries be held?

Surgeries are held every Monday between 10.00am - 4.00pm at different locations. The main sites will include the offices of:

Age Concern Birmingham - City Centre Birmingham Settlement - Newtown and Aston offices Ladywood Community and Health Centre
