Google Japan is hiring

Google is opening a research and development center in Tokyo, Japan.
We're looking to hire talented software engineers, top programmers
and visionary computer scientists. The
team in Tokyo will mirror Google's other engineering offices,
with the same scope of work, hiring standards and unique Google
culture.
Google Engineering is working on problems in a number of areas,
including distributed systems, information retrieval, algorithms,
UI, a variety of novel search features, and scalability issues
related to dealing with huge amounts of data and a rapidly increasing
user base.
In addition, the Tokyo team will focus on improving the experience of our growing Japanese audience and ensuring that Google's usefulness and technology remain unsurpassed worldwide.
Those hired into our Japan office will take on projects that match their backgrounds and interests and will work with their peers in other Google offices to ensure that their concepts come to fruition. We need world-class engineers to develop the next generation search engine. Our engineering team is working on problems in a number of areas, including cutting-edge information retrieval algorithms, scalability issues related to dealing with huge amounts of data and a rapidly increasing user base, and a variety of novel search features. Requirements:
- M.S.or Ph.D in Computer Science or a closely related field.
- Strong C/C++ programming skills.
- Substantial knowledge of UNIX/Linux or Windows environments.
- Extensive experience with designing and programming distributed systems, machine learning, information retrieval algorithms, network programming, and/or developing large software. Asian language web information retrieval experience a plus.
- Several years of software development experience.
- Enthusiasm for solving interesting problems.
- Fluency in written and spoken English and Japanese.

Google is offering an exciting and innovative summer internship program for students pursuing degrees in Computer Science in Japan. Students will spend approximately eight weeks at Google's California Headquarters, working with some of the best software engineers and researchers in Silicon Valley.
Google engineering teams work on problems in many different areas of computer science to collect, manage, process, and understand hundreds of terabytes of information. If you're looking to gain experience overseas working on intriguing projects that impact millions of user per day, this is the internship for you!
What we offer:
- Program Dates: August - September 2004.
- Program Location: Mountain View, California.
- Project assignment matched with your background and interests.

What we look for:
- Currently pursuing a M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely-related field at a Japanese university.

- Strong background in Systems Software or Algorithms.
- Substantial knowledge of UNIX/Linux or Windows environments.
- Comfortable written and spoken communication in English.
