A whale bone arch frames the
Arctic Ocean in Barrow, Alaska, site of the Alaska Humanities
Forum Board meeting in May 2003. Subsistence whaling is an
important part of the Inupiat Eskimo culture in this northernmost
Alaska community of approximately 4500, located 340 miles north of
the Arctic Circle. |
The
mission of the Alaska Humanities Forum is to use
the wisdom and methods of the humanities to enrich the civic,
intellectual and cultural life of all Alaskans.
Each
year Alaskans engage in humanities-based projects
supported or presented by the Alaska Humanities Forum through
such
innovative programs as the
Rose Urban Rural Exchange,
Leadership
Anchorage, Alaska
20/20, and the Grant
Program,
which helps to fund a variety of ground-breaking humanities
projects across the
state.
The Forum serves their mission through the following activities:
1. Breaking down stereotypes between urban and rural Alaska.
2. Giving people from Anchorage's diverse communities the skills and tools
they need to step into leadership roles.
3. Preserving and sharing in Alaska's rich cultural traditions.
4. Measuring quality of life and helping Alaskans work toward a better
future.
The
Forum is a 501(c)(3) organization. Founded in 1972 by the National
Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Forum is one
of 56 state and territorial groups also supported by the NEH.
The Forum is also a member of the Federation of State Humanities Councils.

The Forum's office is housed in one of
Anchorage's most historic buildings, the Alaska Railroad Depot. The Depot
was built in 1942 and is located along the banks of Ship Creek, where Anchorage
had its origins as a tent city for workers building the Alaska Railroad.
