It seems that a high link popularity (LP) score is becoming more and more important every day as one of the primary indicators of a Web site's "importance" to search engines.
In a nutshell, LP is simply an indicator of how many incoming links your Web site receives from other, relevant Web sites. (By "relevant Web sites", I mean Web sites that have content that is relevant to the content of your Web site.)
Simply having incoming links from relevant Web sites, however, will not necessarily improve your site's link popularity score. (By "score", I mean the actual number of high-value incoming links your site receives.) If an incoming link is from a poor-quality site, it might even lower your site's LP score.
