OOAL RULES
The Out on a Limb Contest is so simple even I can play it, but here’s some frequently asked questions for newer players.
Can I play?
Anyone can play. This isn’t a closed club, there are no initiation rites, and it doesn’t cost anything.
What is the Point?
There is no point. This contest is strictly for fun. Anyone who takes themselves too seriously might want to sit this one out.
How do I play?
Respond to the OOAL post before Thursday night at 8 PM. Choose the driver you think will win the pole for event, and the first, second and third places.
How is the contest scored?
Usually late at night when I should be sleeping. Math errors are frequent as are off the wall comments and misspelled handles.
A perfect score is zero. That happened once all of last year at Speedworld. You get a point deducted for every position you were off by. (For example you picked Earnhardt Jr. to finish second. He finished 12th. 2-12= -10. You get negative ten points.) Here’s the tricky part. Well not too tricky. Say you pick Earnhardt Jr. for second and he wins. You were still off by 1 position so you get –1. If he finishes third, you were also off by one position, so you get the same score –1.
How are ties broken?
I don’t wear ties. I don’t break ties. If two people win so be it. Sharing is a beautiful thing. (Sharon on the other hand is not but let’s not go there.) If I happen to like one poster better then another, or received a huge bribe of cash, American built V Twin Motorcycles, parts for antique fire engines, or big block muscle cars from a player I will compromise my principals without qualm.
What fabulous prizes can I win?
Nada. Nothing. This is strictly for fun. You win the admiration of your peers, the right to have me make fun of your picks, and bragging rights for the week.
The contest is called “Out On A Limb” yet a lot of players choose the drivers who always run up front. What’s the deal with that?
Out On a Limb simply means you are making your picks public, and thus subjecting yourself to ridicule if you are way off. Some players pick Gordon, Martin and Jarrett every week. Others pick guys like Marcis, Pardue, and Green. Play whatever slate you wish. There aren’t many rules and you can feel free to color outside the lines. This is not my contest. It is ours.
Is there a season long OOAL champion?
Nope. This is a week by week contest and there's no adding up of scores. Although maybe I'll take the top ten finishers of the Richmond Fall OOAL contest and only they can score points in the next 10 rounds.....no wait a minute. Next to catching a ride home from a kegger with Scott Wimmer that's the dumbest idea ever.
What's this Eliminator rule about?
Starting in 2003 the Eliminator rule will be in effect for all races. If the driver you pick for the pole doesn't qualify in the top 25, or any of the drivers you pick for first second and third don't finish in the top 25, you're eliminated. You do however get a lovely parting gift. You get to loot Krusty The Klown's house that weekend.
