The clean, fresh waters of Lake Taupo (New Zealand's largest lake) are
surrounded by lush native bush, rolling green hills, a mountain range, steep
rivers and volcanic plains. To the south, three spectacular volcanic mountains
rise - Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngarahoe.
Lake Taupo is fast becoming the event capital of New Zealand, hosting
the New Zealand Ironman and Round the Lake (165km) cycle race - both
internationally recognised events.
The famous Waitomo Caves at Otorohanga lie to the north-east of this lake.
They are known for their limestone formations, their glow-worm enchantment and
adventurous black water rafting.
There are wonderful walks for the bush walker to the experienced climber
(National and World Heritage Parks) and almost every outdoor adventure known can
be found and experienced. There are wonderful rivers and lakes for fishing,
boating and swimming and courses for golf.
As well as being volcanic, this area is also geothermal. Hot pools can be
found throughout his area.
The Waikato Region, in which Lake Taupo lies, is one of the richest
agricultural and pastoral areas of the world. In its the northern areas, you
drive through green pastures where champion racehorses are bred and some of New
Zealand's best dairy farms are located.
