She Stoops to Conquer

The Pearl Theatre Company begins its nineteenth season with Oliver Goldsmith's comedy She Stoops to Conquer. Written in 1773, the play mercilessly skewers England's class structure and pokes at our prejudices about class, gender, and character. In the play, the well-bred Miss Kate Hardcastle plays a bar maid in order to win the attentions of rakish Mr. Marlow, a gentleman whose fumbling ways with upper-class ladies and familiarities with working-class girls belie his chances at a suitable marriage. Meanwhile, Mrs. Hardcastle tries to foist her son Tony Lumpkin on a girl named Constance Neville.

On October 15, She Stoops to Conquer will begin performances in repertory with Nathan the Wise.
