Other Agency RequirementsThe Department of Fish and Game provides the following information about the requirements of other agencies as a courtesy. Every attempt has been made to make this as complete as possible. However, because changes in other agency information is beyond our control, we cannot accept responsibility for ensuring that this list of other agency requirements is complete. You are responsible to be sure you meet all necessary requirements for the area you will be operating. Contact information is provided for these other agencies, and new operators are encouraged to contact their local charter boat association for information. If you learn of other requirements not listed here please let us know by email and we will update this information.
All businesses and individuals that provide sport fishing guide services are required to have a state licensee to conduct business. The business license is good for 2 years, the year the license is granted and the following year. These can be obtained at through the Alaska Dept. of Commerce and Economic Development. All vessels used for charter sport fishing in Alaska must be licensed with the Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission. Forms are available at most ADF&G offices or directly from the commission:

A Coast Guard license is required of captains and licensed guides when carrying passengers for hire. Contact the Coast Guard for license and testing information. In some instances, the deckhand may also be required to get a Coast Guard license depending upon the extent of his/her duties onboard a vessel. Per regulation 11 AAC 96.018 and 11 AAC 96.250, the Dept. of Natural Resources will require that any commercial recreation business providing services on state land register prior to commencement of operation each calendar year. Registration must be completed at least 30 days in advance of expected use. This means that all Sport Fish Charter businesses that use state uplands, shorelands, tidelands, and fresh water bodies must register with DNR at least 30 days prior to expected use. At this time, charter businesses that operate exclusively in saltwater, without taking clients ashore on state owned tidelands or uplands, are not required to register.
