David Robertson is music director of the Orchestre National de Lyon and artistic director of that city’s auditorium since 2000, the first artist to hold both musical posts in Lyon. Mr. Robertson appears regularly with the major orchestras of North America, and during the 2003–04 season returned to conduct two weeks each at the New York Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He also led the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and National, Pittsburgh, Seattle, and San Francisco symphony orchestras, and he took part in the inaugural season at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall.
In Europe Mr. Robertson has led the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC
Symphony, Halle Orchestra, Bayerisches Staatsorchester in Munich, NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg, Berlin Staatskapelle, Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, and the NHK Symphony in Japan. In North America his appearances in recent seasons have included The Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Atlanta, Houston, New World, and St. Louis symphony orchestras.
Born in Santa Monica, California, Mr. Robertson was educated at London’s Royal Academy of Music, where he studied French horn, composition, and conducting. He was resident conductor of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra (1985–87), and music director of the Ensemble Intercontemporain in Paris (1992–2000), founded by Pierre Boulez. In 1997 Mr. Robertson was named a recipient of the Seaver/National Endowment for the Arts Conductors Award, and in December 1999 Musical America named him Conductor of the Year.
David Robertson’s career has been marked by his close connection to student musicians. He has led outreach programs with the Ensemble Intercontemporain and the Orchestre National de Lyon, and has worked with students at the Paris Conservatory, Juilliard School, Tanglewood Music Center, and Aspen Music Festival.
