Les
Portes du Soleil is a large region of 13 interconnected resorts
between Lake Geneva in Switzerland and Mont Blanc in France. The
region covers 14 valleys and about 400 square miles, offering
650 km of marked runs and about 230 lifts in total.
Villages of Morzine, Avoriaz and Les Gets on the French side and
Champery and Morgins on the Swiss side are the main and most popular
spots of the region. The region offers not only wide range of
ski routes for skiers of all skills, but also a variety of apres
ski activities.
A
charming small village of Morzine is the central point of the
region. The resort's ski routes should suit needs of all skiers.
Trails of Pleney and Le Ranfolly will be ideal for skiing families
and those, who prefer more speed and difficulty will find slopes
of Pointe de Nyon better.
Les Gets is the best place for beginners. Easy slopes will not
be a problem for advanced skiers and may become boring quite fast.
However, Les Gets seems to be a very good place for tourists aiming
at cross country skiing. Beautiful walking trails surround the
village in summer and in winter.
Avoriaz
is linked to Swiss resorts in the region via the legendary 'Wall'
descent -- unofficially categorised a 'brown' run due to the effect
it may have on your underwear - you can take the chair down without
shame instead, if necessary. The area has skiing for all standards
and there is plenty for experts including five testing black runs
(20 in the region).
The village of Avoriaz is the paradise for skiers. Accommodation
units are located directly on the ski runs, so you never need
to take of your skis. A lift going along the village allows everyone
start their daily skiing just at hotel's door.
An additional attraction of Avoriaz is Mur de Chavanette - one
of the steepest slopes of the Alps. The run is full of bumps prepared
especially for toughest skiers.
The
biggest disadvantage of this French-Swiss ski circus is lack of
restaurants available directly on the slopes. Hungry skiers have
to come back to the village to get something to eat. For those
who do not want to waste time, self prepared sandwiches seem to
be best option. Otherwise, you will have to come back even for
a small snack.
Cross
country skiers will find Les Portes du Soleil very interesting.
Total of 250 km of trails await them every winter. French village
of Morzine seems to be the best place to stay at.
