Sukhothai, the first capital of the Thai Nation and the cradle of Thai civilization for more than 700 years, now lies as a national Historical Park, 440 kms North of Bangkok. Magnificently restored ruins of palaces and temples dramatically unfold to the visitors the grandeur that was Sukhothai. Here the Thai alphabet architecture, art and national culture were born and passed down through history. Sukhothai's magnificent palaces and temples were left to deteriorate and fell into ruins. Restorations however have retained evidence of the outstanding and refined aesthetic sense of Thai architects of the Sukhothai period.

	Situated not too far from Bangkok, many attractions are easily accessible to foreigners visiting Sukhothai. It was in Sukhothai that the nation's annual festival "Loykrathong" originated.
	This festival is still celebrated on the period of the full moon between October and November. Foreign visitors can join both high ranking officials and the citizens in this celebration.
