NOAA back buttonANADROMOUS FISH

CONSERVATION ACT

What does it do?

ANADROMOUS Fish Conservation Act of 1965 (Act) projects are conducted for the conservation, development, and enhancement of ANADROMOUS fishery resources (those that migrate from salt to fresh water for spawning) including similar species in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. All projects must be cleared with the State fishery agency of the State that the work is carried out in. The funding level for the Act was $2.1 million for fiscal year 2003. Many projects funded under this program are critical elements of larger multi/ funded programs to manage, restore or enhance United States ANADROMOUS species such as Pacific and Atlantic salmon, Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon, and American Shad and river herrings.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

A list of the recent projects funded under the Act by NMFS Region follows:

Monitor the American shad population dynamics in the Connecticut and Thames Rivers
and the abundance, distribution, and movements of immature shortnose sturgeon in
the Connecticut River.

Determine the effect of predation on recruitment of anadromous alosids in waters recently
provided with upstream fish passage.
