SOUTHEAST PENINSULA
Kendari: This capital of S.E. Celebes lies in a very fertile district on the lower right leg of this amoebashaped island. There's a Japanese nickel project here. getting there: Take a boat from Palopo to Kolaka, Rp3000-3500, 1-2 days. Or from Bajoa, by bemo 6 km north of Bone on the coast opposite Ujung Padang, catch a W W II landing craft, 1 night, to Kolaka. Stay in Losmen Teluk Bone in Kolaka, Rp500; they also serve food and drink. From Kolaka take a bus to Kendari, Rig 1500 125 km. stay: Many cheap losmens in Kendari. crafts: Known for its fine silver, and quite inexpensive gold crafts. Some of the most intricate filigree work imaginable is spun from cobweb-like silver threads: brooches, necklaces, lizards with emerald eyes, even large fruit bowls. from Kendari: Fly with Merpati to Ujung Pandang for Rp17,250, or to Surabaya, Rp33,450.Bajau People: A nomadic, boat-dwelling shore people usually living around Bugis settlements on the remote coasts of the eastern peninsula along the Gulf of Bone, the Straits of Tioro and Butung, the island of Wowoni, Kendari Bay, and northwards to the Salabangka Islands. Outstanding swimmers, they are able to dive so deep that more ignorant Sulawesians believe they have gills like fish. Children are thrown into the sea to make them downproof. The Bajau use trident harpoons and bamboo spears to hunt the giant stringray, sometimes employing the poisonous spine as a point for a dagger. They are dead accurate with these implements. The Bajau are masters of a cross-legged defensive art adapted to fighting on boats or in very cramped quarters. Wangi Wangi: An island in the Kepulauan Tukangbesi group. Take a ship (or kapa/ /agar) leaving every 10 days or so from Ujung Pandang; has all classes accommodation. A beautiful lagoon surrounds the kampung of Wangi Wangi with only a 5 m wide, 2 m deep entrance, though inside the lagoon itself it's 5 m deep. There are 2 cafes in the village where beer is sold, village girls do the joget, guitars strum into the night. Have a Bugis boat built for 1-1'h million rupiah; several foreigners have had trad boats built here. Catch kapal motors carrying goods to Ambon from Wangi Wangi. vicinity of Wangi Wangi: Just outside of town, enter a hole in the ground down through an underground cavern with a cool freshwater spring, the only one in the area. About a 1'h hour walk from the kampung there's a rock in a cave which has a gold color and is thought to disappear and reappear (tidal?). Other caves in the vicinity as well. It's a two hour walk to the lighthouse from Wangi Wangi village. There are some splendid lagoons to explore on nearby islands.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
