| USAID Assistance to Jordan |
|
Despite budget cuts in USAID programs elsewhere, U.S. economic assistance to Jordan has increased dramatically over the past decade – from $7.2 million in 1996 to an average annual funding of $250 million. The expanded program stems, in a large part, from an announcement made in 1997 to acknowledge the importance of providing additional resources for countries making a positive contribution to the peace in the region. Since that time, Jordan has been an important partner for the U.S. in the Middle East , making it one of the five largest recipients of USAID funds worldwide.
- The USAID program in Jordan is funded from USAID's Economic Support Funds (ESF).
- In October 2003, USAID/Jordan initiated a new five-year Country Strategy for FY2004-2009.
- Total economic assistance provided to Jordan since 1951 now exceeds $4.1 billion.
- Total economic assistance provided to Jordan since 1997 alone exceeds $2.3 billion.
