Parents are the first, and most important teachers of their children, not only directly teaching, but choosing products for their children. For preschoolers, the distinction between education and entertainment is subtle. Children of this age group are learning constantly, and the more enjoyment they get from what they watch, read, listen to, or interact with, the more they will take in, and learn. This site looks at a range of resources and media aimed at that critical age before school is started, and assesses the educational and entertainment value of these products. This DVD is full of warm fuzzies without soppy sentiment. It has the feel and intimacy of visiting your favourite relatives. Children will love the colourful and energetic puppets (or is it muppets?), fabulous music and the calm, caring and wise Bear.
Let’s face it--there are not many children’s programs left that you can let your children watch with the complete confidence that there is no violence or that they won't be traumatised in in some way. Let them watch Barney. They’ll enjoy it and you’ll feel like your being a responsible parent (just don’t watch it with them unless you’ve got a bucket handy!).
overall I think that this was a very good and funny book with funny pictures. It was easy to read with only eight chapters, and I think that boys especially, starting at around five years old, would really like this book. I can’t wait for the next one, which will probably with Gibblewort ending on an Old Island somewhere (rather than Old Ireland).
Children will love these books, and for younger siblings of children who already enjoy mazes, this is a chance for them to join in. The scenes are fairly true in terms of the animals they contain, and so children can really learn about the different habitats and the types of creatures and items they contain.
What really sets Hi-5 apart from other children’s performers is the clever and subtle way that writers Helena Harris and Posie Graeme-Evans incorporate carefully designed educational principles into the play. Kids won’t have a clue how much they are learning because it is all so sparkly and fun.
Very young children never seem to tire of lifting flaps, and there are many opportunities for children to identify the simple farm animals - the chickens, ducks, horses, pigs, cows, and sheep. Each flap features a mother and baby animals, and they all have unique names that children can associate with each animal.
It is the animals, rather than the people, who are the centre of these wonderful narrations. Nor are these tales spoiled by any awkward personification of the animals they feature. Humour aside, it may be said that the genius of this particular production lies in its restraint, all that is left unsaid, of the way in which one’s imagination is allowed to fill in the gaps.
Raising Kids…without breaking the bank is a very sensible, easy to read book which provides some useful strategies to keeping the cost of children under control, without denying children the things they really need.
