Short Guide to WigsWhether your desire to purchase a wig is medical (cancer, alopecia), beauty or fashion, shoppers should thoroughly understand the differences in wigs and the background information necessary to make an informed purchase from a wig supplier, wig store, wig manufacturer or other wig company. Synthetic Hair Wigs vs. Human Hair WigsWigs are sold using two main different types of hair, synthetic and human hair. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Synthetic Hair WigsSynthetic hair wigs cost much cheaper then human hair wigs and are favored by many women because they are easier to maintain, clean, hold their style longer, dry fast after washing and are less expensive then human hair wigs. Synthetic hair wigs can cost between $65-$250 for a really good one. (Avoid synthetic, cheap wigs in the $35 price range as you get what you pay for!) Synthetic hair wigs look quite natural and most come ready to wear in a wider variety of colors and styles then human hair wigs. If you are looking to make your first wig purchase, then a synthetic hair wig is probably the best choice. And with their lower price, you can afford to buy two, having a backup for the days you want to change your style or clean your primary wig. The downside to synthetic hair wigs are they very susceptible to heat. Due to the artificial, kanikelon fibers your synthetic wig is made out of, you have to be very careful with direct heat sources on your wig. This means no hair dryer, no curling iron and washing it in cold water. You even have to be careful when cooking. The heat can melt the fibers or cause it to "frizz." Human Hair WigsHuman hair wigs ( real hair wigs )are popular among the experienced wig wearer who appreciates the more natural look, feel, movement and versatility these wigs offer. Human hair wigs can be styled, permed, blow-dryed and even colored. Human hair wigs also last longer then synthetic wigs. However, human hair wigs require more work to clean and maintain. They are also much more expensive, costing from $100 for a low quality wig to $4,000 for a high end, custom made wig. Human hair wigs come in two basic varieties, Processed and Unprocessed wigs. Processed wigs use black, coarser hair donated by Indians, Indonesians and Chinese. The hair is then dyed and styled during the wig manufacturing process. These type human hair wigs are generally cheaper in cost. Unprocessed wigs rely on hair donated from Europe. Also called European wigs, these are the finest quality available because it requires no chemical processing. European hair wigs are not only the finest, but are also more expensive. Some wig makers are now offering a blend of synthetic and European hair wigs which offer the advantages that both types have to offer, the natural look and feel of human hair and the ease of care with synthetics. Owners should still be wary of heat sources on these wigs, however. Construction Methods (1) Machine Made Wigs: Wigs made by machine, ready to wear are the most common and least expensive. In most styles, this means the hair fibers are machine sewn onto a "weft" in a fixed pattern. The wefts are then assembled together on an open net base. Generally this type of construction is meant to be worn when you have hair as you can see through the wefts when the wind blows. Machine produced ready-made wigs with synthetic hair, offer low cost, ease of care and fast delivery often within 3-4 days if in stock. Many styles are available through catalogs and prices range from $39 to $300. Hand Made Wigs: Hand production methods involve hand knotting on net base hairpieces or hand inserting on custom molded base hairpieces. Hand construction methods usually provide a more random and natural appearance. The construction process also includes the base or cap, (where the hair is attached), of which there are 4 different types. 1. The standard or ready to wear is the most common and least expensive. In this design, the cap is generally made in sizes petite to large with the majority in size medium, to fit a wide range of head sizes. The back has a series of hooks and eyes or Velcro on a thin elastic band that can be adjusted to make the wigfit snugly. 2. Semi-Custom Some manufactures offer semi-custom shaped net base wigs. This is usually accomplished with a series of different cap sizes and shapes that are fit to the client's head. Both the circumference and the shape of the dome can vary. Semi-custom versions offer the advantage of a more secure fit and can be made in 4-6 weeks. The hair is usually hand-tied onto a net base to provide a more natural look. They range in cost from $1,200 to $1,800. Some allow for fitting while the client still has hair and can be worn through hair loss and re-growth patterns common with alopecia areata or chemotherapy treatments. 3. Custom-made or Vacuum Fit Wigs: The custom molded bases are usually used for permanent and total hair loss. A plaster mold is made of the client's head and the base is formed from this mold. The precise fit creates what is called the suction or "vacuum" type fit. These hairpieces can be worn without adhesive and are the most secure and natural looking. They require 4-6 months to make and range in price from $2,000 to $4,000. Plaster molding of the head is done for other form-fitting custom hairpieces, which improve the comfort and security but do not provide a "vacuum" type fit. 4. Monofilament Wig base, MonoTop Wigs:(2) A monofilament (monotop) cap is designed to make the wig look as if it is growing from your own head. A special Monofilament construction located on top and front of these wigs makes parting a Monofilament wig easy, revealing a natural looking scalp below with the ability to assume the wearers natural scalp color. It features a thin, breathable mesh material at the crown where individual grafts of hair are tied by handplaced from the hairline of the head toward the crown section. This design is especially good for women with hair loss at the crown of their head. It offers the most styling versatility because it can be parted & brushed in any direction. These wigs also include areas for the application of wig tape. The capless construction provides excellent ventilation and comfort, as well as natural looking beauty. The top portion of the cap is specially woven to allow for comfort and excellent ventilation. This helps to prevent irritation and itchiness. Monofilament is considered to be one of the most desirable of wig types. Most women, especially those who wear wigs every day, feel that its superior wearability and natural look more than justify the additional cost. SOURCES: |
