As one of the oldest search engines, Lycos was launched on the web in 1994 with their search engine crawler. Lycos has changed from a straightforward search engine to a Yahoo! type of directory that includes news, shopping, personalized sections, and their search engine component. Lycos was partnered in October 2000 with Terra.com, a Spanish and Portuguese-speaking online company. Terra Lycos now owns he following web properties Lycos.com, Terra.com, HotBot.com, Animation Express.com, Angelfire.com, A Tu Hora, Gamesville.com, htmlGEAR.com, Ivertia.com, Lycos Zone, Matchmaker.com, Quote.com, Raging Bull.com, Rumbo.com, Sonique, Tripod.com, Webmonkey.com, WhoWhere.com, and Wired News.

Technology - Subscriber: the main results are compiled fron other indexes and directories.

Free: Lycos receives their web results from a variety of sources. The results from the "Popular" section of Lycos comes primarily from the Lycos web editors. In the "Web Sites" section, first page results come from LookSmart, and secondary results are provided by Yahoo!. Some results come from the Open Directory and the Lycos web crawler. The Open Directory powers the category links at the top of the "Web Sites" section, and also provides some web site matches. Below the category links are web site links, which come primarily from LookSmart and Yahoo search.

Paid: There are two types of submissions to the Lycos search engine Lycos Insite Adbuyer and Google Adwords entries.

The Lycos Insite Adbuyer displays text-based ad units including a headline, text and URL throughout the Lycos Network including Lycos search, HotBot search, Tripod, Angelfire and Gamesville. This service is a (CPC) cost per click type service that requires that you only pay for actual traffic your site, received from user click-throughs. There are three levels of service: Lycos Select, Pro and Enterprise.

Select: This is a 12 month service in which you can submit URLs for inclusion into the FAST and Inktomi web catalogs. The use of this service will give you access to Lycos and HotBot, in addition all search engines that display FAST and Inktomi search results. This service also includes rapid indexing (48 – 72 hours) with 48 hour refreshes, and Click-thru reporting.

Pro: Lycos Insite Pro gives you a premium search solution including inclusion into the Lycos Web index, powered by FAST. This service includes 48 hr rapid inclusion in the FAST web index with 48 full refresh, remotely hosted Site Search Index - Hosted in Lycos' world-class data center, Premium Site Search relevancy - Lycos has been in the search business from day one, Sub-second search response time – with 99.9% Reliability with Personalized results page - Customize your site search AND web search results page with your logo and site colors, and Personalized Site Submission Reports.

Enterprise: Lycos InSite Enterprise is designed for large web sites for vast web page inclusion and through bulk URL submission to the Lycos web index, powered by FAST.

Google: (see Google AdWords) an auction-based service lets you set your own price and manage your campaign provides the sponsored entries.

Placement Requirements

Although it is not as significant in the results rankings as it used to be, the Lycos web crawler is still spidering the web. The Lycos web crawler does not weigh META tags heavily. Indexing is based on an algorithm that takes a look at components of the URL name, Meta title, text body headings and subheadings, how frequently words appear, where these words appear in relationship to one another, as well as a document abstract (based on full body text). Any web page that does not have a minimum of 75 words is not indexed but Frames are supported. Lycos does not care about case sensitivity. They will not allow special characters in text, so avoid ?, =, and $. Pages are added in 3 to 6 weeks.

Suggestions and Tips for Best Results

The thing to remember is that you must have suitable URL content and be engineered to beat your competition within Lycos before you register your pages. Just registering with Lycos does not assure a suitable ranking.
