Rogue River Fall or Summer Chinook entering the river at Gold Beach
7/1/04 Fall or Summer Chinook are Biting in the Rogue River estuary at Gold Beach!

Fishing for Fall or Summer Chinook is great in the Rogue River estuary, on friday we landed 5 fish on an evening trip. These were very nice fish, two topped 45# one was 30# and one 22# the last was 17# we could have easily take a sixth fish but had nowhere to put it, the fish box runth over! I have fished the Rogue River for over 35 years and have never seen this quality of King Salmon and quanity at this time of year. We normally are just getting started on our Rogue River Fall King Salmon run in mid July. The estuary is full of bait and a hunderd Pelicans are diving on the bait. The Rogue Bay never gets this kind of bait and feeding birds until late August. This is setting up to be a great year! There has been 40 pound plus fish caught every day for the last 10 days many of these are pushing 50#. Give us a call we still have dates open for a Fall King Salmon trip. If you want more info on Fall Chinook Salmon or where to stay information go to our big information site at http://roguerivertrips.info and you will find a wealth of information.

Rogue River Update 5/9/04
The bulk of the Rogue River Spring Salmon run has just arrived at Gold Beach. Today there were Spring Chinook rolling from tidewater to Agness. Pelicans are diving on bait at the Rogue River mouth. (This is very unusual as bait does not show until late summer). Many boats limited today and most boats had at least a couple of nice Springers. Here my party of Stan and Jules landed two 23 pound hatchery Springers just below Agness. We lost one at the boat after it became intangled with some unforgiving object just out of sight below the surface. More fish were seen and caught farther down the river. We have dates open for the last part of May and all of June. We should see a mass movement of Spring Chinook over the next 3 to 4 weeks. 30,000 to 40,000 Springers should be available in the Lower Rogue for the next month or so. Expect large numbers of Springers to arrive at Medford area about June 1st. We will be fishing both the Meford area and the Lower Rogue River for Spring Chinook the next month and half. Nows the time to get after Rogue River Springers. 1-800-348-4138

Rogue River Update 4/30/04
Weeks of Low Water Flow have now been broken with 3 inches of rain here at Gold Beach, snow in the mountains for a slower release of water down the river. The season for Springers had started very slow with only a few fish being caught, water flows are to blame. With this weeks rain the Rogue has blown out with flows jumping from 4000 cfs to over 20,000 cfs. This is what Spring Chinook fishermen have been praying for WATER FLOW. As the river drops we should see the seasons first major run of Spring Chinook into the Rogue River. This years run size forcast from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is 50,000 Spring Chinook! That is double the average run size. Last year a great year the run was 46,000. All of these 50,000 Spring Chinook must come in the Rogue River by June 20th or so due to warming water after that date becoming leathal to them. I believe there is no way over 5,000 Springers have entered yet so 45,000 fish must enter in next few weeks. No is the time to get fishing for them this week-end on that is (April 24th). Good Luck! Oh, we still have open dates or can book you a trip with our Rogue River Guide group out of our new shop in Gold Beach, Rogue River Country Guide Shack. Steve

The seasons first Spring Chinook Salmon are entering the Lower Rogue River. These Spring Chinook are the finest eating King Salmon on the planet. Mint bright, butterball fat with an aggressive nature, Spring Chinook generate an excitement all their own.
The Lower Rogue River has been a Mecca for Spring Chinook Salmon fishing for 150 years. Fishermen come from all over the world to catch Spring Chinook on the famous Rogue River.
Specially equipped power boats with tops to keep spring rains off and heaters to mellow the cool mornings make Spring Chinook fishing not only exciting and productive but comfortable also.
Rogue River Spring Chinook Salmon average 18 to 22 pounds of rock hard fighting King Salmon. However in recent years ocean conditions have been extremely good with lots of feed and great water temperatures. These conditions have allowed our Spring Chinook to grow to sizes outside the norm. Spring Chinook in the 25 to 35 pound class have been very common the last few years, with many topping the magical 40 pound range. This years run should follow what the last few years have shown with larger sized Springers.
On the Rogue River for 2004 Spring Chinook Salmon fishermen will be allowed 2 Springers per day one of which maybe non fin clipped. With a 70 percent hatchery return this put anglers in a great position to take some nice Springers home. On Columbia River Basin streams anglers can retain no un-fin clipped Spring Chinook, so your chances of taking home some great Spring Chinook is greater on the Rogue River. Spring Chinook fishing
on the Lower Rogue River at Gold Beach will really get going by mid March with a peak in mid April to mid may. The best fishing of course is when water flows are high and water temperatures at 50 degrees to 60 degrees. Lets go Springer Fish’n.

Rogue River Country Guide Shack opens March 15th
We have been hard at building a fish’n shop here in Gold Beach. Its small but it has a great Hwy 101 location at the Port of Gold Beach. The Guide Shack is located at the South end of the Rogue River bridge in front of Jerry’s Jetboats. We will be booking local guides, selling bait and a small amount of tackle. We will also have fishing gear available for rent. The building of a Guide Shack has been something we have been contemplating for 20 years. Every year we see new guides show up with little or no experience, last year there were seven new guides. Those wanting to book a trip fishing do not know who to go with so many end up with an under qualified guide. We know the guides here, we know there skills and limitations so we can book the best guide for those wanting a quality fishing trip on the Rogue River. For our booking service we will be charging the guide a commission it cost the fishermen nothing to use our booking service.

We will have items for sale such as Guide Shack leaders custom tied by our guides, just like the ones the pro’s use. Spinner blades, guide quality bait, spreaders and spinners.
We are going to have Rogue Rods in the shop. We will also be handling some used equipment which is being rotated out by the guides, this usually in great shape at a fraction of original cost. We will have the best tackle for rent on the South Coast. It’s all new and will build with time.

Next Fishing Oppertunity on Chetco will be Fall Chinook in October
Look to October for Chetco Fall Chinook!

The Winter Steelhead Season closed March 31st 2004 Look for the next run of Winter Steelhead in Late December 2004.

2/29/04 Winter Steelhead Fishing on the Southern Oregon Coast rivers has been a very good season to date. Many Winter Steelhead fishermen believe that Winter Steelhead season is over by March 1st. Wrong! Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife reports over 50% of Winter Steelhead enter the small coastal rivers after April 1st which is the closing date for fishing Winter Steelhead on the Chetco - Elk - Sixes Rivers. (the Rogue River is open all year). In 1998 a fisherman in my boat (Rod Sease) broke the Steelhead record on the Rogue River with a 24 pound Winter Steelhead on the 30th of March, this monster Steelhead was part of a limit for two anglers.
If you still are looking to scratch your itch to get into some great Winter Steelhead there is still plenty of time. We have dates open for the Rogue - Elk and Sixes Rivers and would
expect some of the seasons best catches. The rogue is currently high for Steelhead, however the Elk River should be Steelhead green and full of bright Winter Steelies. Give us a call as soon as you can and lets get to catch’n some keepers. 1-800-348-4138
