MIDLAND FISHERIES START TO HOT UP AS THE PETER SEASON GETS UNDERWAY

The Peter season has now commenced and should get into full swing over the coming week or indeed weeks if weather obliges. Lough Sheelin produced some good fishing including an 8 pounder on the Peter. Ennell is still a bit patchy particularly during the day but Owel despite very low water levels is starting to come into its own with a good evening rise reported most evenings.

A late move of fresh grilse was reported at Castleconnell Salmon Fishery. TIGHT LINES!

LOUGH SHEELIN

Week Ending  Sunday July 25th, 2004

Sean Gurhy Assistant Fisheries Inspector Lough Sheelin Office reports

In excess of 200 trout were reported caught (most released) for the week on Sheelin. Pat Tormey Kells had the best fish of the week at 8lbs 1oz and totalled 3 fish for 14lbs all on Green Peter at Goreport Bay. Pat Smith Trim, Co Meath caught and released most of his catch of 6 fish weighing from 3lbs up to 4lbs at the Finea end of the lake. Owen Mc Faddin Kells had a nice fish of 3lbs 3ozs, all fish caught on Green Peter.  Sedge fishing is good and anglers are encouraged to fish the lake in the evenings - you just might get that fish of a lifetime which we know Sheelin can produce.

A Youth Fly Fishing Competition hosted by the ShRFB and the L.S.T.P.A. was held on the lake on Saturday 23rd July at Kilnahard. There was plenty of angling training provided, including casting skills etc. Later 30 young anglers took part in a competition and it was nice to see three girls take up the sport. Brendan Flynn, Coothill won the event with 2 fish for over 3lbs, best 2lbs 1oz on a sedge. Second place went to Kielan O'Reilly, Crover House Hotel with a trout of 1.5lbs also caught on a sedge. Third place went to Paul Rush from Co Armagh with a fish of 1lb 3ozs. There were several fish hooked and lost over the day.

LOUGH O'FLYNN

Week Ending  Sunday July 25th, 2004

John Ryan, Assistant Fisheries Inspector Ballinlough Office reports

The local angling club held a competition on the lake on Sunday. 26 anglers took part and 70 fish were caught. Fishing generally has been good with large hatches of sedge and olives. One huge hatch of mayfly was observed one day last week which brought on a very good rise of fish. Fish returned were of exceptional quality. D Mc Kenna from Louth had his bag limit of 6 fish on Saturday July 23rd. He expressed delight with his catch.  Joe Flynn from Oran, Co Roscommon and Michael Maurice from Castlerea had 19 fish over 2.5 days fishing. The best fish of the week was caught by Bernard Mannion, Castlerea at 3lbs on a sedge. The outlook is very promising for the coming week as temperatures recover.

LOUGH ENNELL

Week Ending  Sunday July 25th, 2004

Pat Mc Donnell, Fishery Officer  Shannon Regional Fisheries Board Mullingar Office reports

The Peter season has commenced but fishing is not as good as was expected, and except for one or two evenings the Peter hatches have been somewhat sporadic compared to other years. On the evenings when the hatch was substantial there was no great movement of fish with anglers having to work at the task. There were 19 fish officially reported, virtually all fish were caught on sedges, mainly the Peter. When Ennell produces trout they are generally fine quality wild fish. Mick Devaney Mullingar had four fish for 15lbs, best 5.2lbs over 5 evenings, which proved the best fish of the week. Paul McCormack,  Killbeggan was a close contender with a five pounder and a 4 pounder. Martin Mc Gorian & Dave McBride Dublin had 4 good fish over two days weighing 3lbs, 3.10lbs, 3.12lbs and 4.5lbs. Conor Lynch, Clara & John O’ Donoghue, Kildare fishing together had three fish of 4lbs, 3lbs and 2.5lbs. Martin & Colm Hope  Mullingar had 2 fish of 3lbs and 3.5lbs. John Mc Evoy Portarlington, Aidan Creedan Enfield, and T. Sheehan from Edenderry all returned fish over the week. Best locations were the southern end of lake, from Malachy's island to Car island. Prospects look good for the coming week with weather conditions now favourable. Hopefully the fish will oblige. Tight Lines

Ollie fisherd with Tommy Cope on Saturday and had 7 fish between them, best fish 2.5lbs. Brendan Murray,  Mullingar had 11 fish (returned 7). Dave Murray,  Mullingar had 3 fish for 4.5lbs. Mick Flanagan, Angling Correspondent for the Westmeath Topic and Sunday World Newspaper Tel: 087 2797270: mick@midlandangling.com reports on Midland Lakes and Rivers.

LOUGH OWEL ....

As mentioned last week, Lough Owel is getting seriously low at the moment, and it seems the lake is dropping on a weekly basis. Local anglers reckon it's going to take some time for the lake to come back to some sort of acceptable level. Next Wednesday 4th August the Dan Mullally Trophy will be fished on Owel. Fishing is from 7pm - 11pm with weigh in at Mullallys. The Peter season should be in full swing for this event & a good turn out is expected.
