Update: Vandalized Statue Of Sadako Repaired

[2,972 reads]

The repaired statue of atomic bomb victim Sadako Sasaki in Seattle Peace Park in Washington state will be unveiled Friday, the 59th anniversary of the 1945 bombing of Hiroshima, after it was vandalized last year.

The statue of Sadako, who died of leukemia in 1955 at age 12 after being exposed to radiation from the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima when she was 2, was vandalized in December and lost its right...

Arousing the Goddess: A Man's Encounters with Kali in India
by Tim Ward

I first heard about the Goddess from the lips of a Belgian Tibetan Buddhist monk. It was at a monastery in the Himalayas where I was studying Buddhism for the summer. He told me that we were living in Kaliyuga, the Age of Destruction named after Kali, the Black Goddess of Hinduism.

"She wears a garland of skulls around her neck, holds a machete in one hand, a severed head in another, and dances upon the corpse of her spouse, Shiva. This fearsome feminine energy signifies chaos, death and the dissolution of the universe," the monk said. "In Kaliyuga, the destructive passions run wild, causing much pain and suffering. And so it is also a great time for Buddhist practice, because the path of liberation from suffering becomes most appealing."

In my studies at the monastery I learned that cessation of suffering was at the heart of Buddhist practice, and that desire was the cause of all suffering and so was to be rooted out. And for a would-be monk, the most potent and dangerous form of desire is lust for a woman

"There's no prayer or charm that can protect a monk from the beast with soft horns on its chest," goes the Buddhist aphorism.

Indeed, I discovered many Buddhist practices are designed to protect monks from the evils of female flesh. In many sects, a woman is not permitted to touch a monk, not permitted to be alone with a monk. In Thailand a woman must kneel down whenever a monk walks by so that her shape won't excite him. In some schools of Buddhism, women are not even permitted to become nuns... [Full Article]

Sirius Rising 2004
Brushwood Folklore Center
Sherman, New York
Review by Don and Daniella WaterHawk

Well... as we drove out of our driveway, we took one last look at our banana trees and tropical garden, and before we made the turn onto the main road, we already began to get homesick pangs. Looking at each other in the van, and remarking that its okay, for we were going to meet family and friends that we only get to see once a year. We set our traveling shields and trusted that Grandfather would help us see that the trip was safe and quick. Well, we were half right, the trip was safe, but not quick. Because of the storms it took us three days of driving before arriving at the Brushwood Folklore Center in Sherman, New York. Owned and operated by Frank and Darlene Barney. So we arrived at Brushwood with looming clouds and were anxious to set up before the impending rain...

Recent Witchvox Changes....

  • Speed: Recent code analysis and re-writes have rendered this page more efficient in loading... What was a load time of 5 seconds is now less than 2 (relative to volume at the moment you hit and your 'pipe') - see YOUR load time under Wren's Nest to your right.

  • Change: Due to a constant battle against attackers and spammers we now require that you be logged in to send email to any of the 60+ thousand Personal Pagan Profiles here at TWV. (Group, Event, Shop etc listings are still open to the public)

  • Forced Mentoring: You can only contact Pagan Teen Profiles IF you are a Teen Pagan yourself and you are logged in - This was recently instituted due to ongoing complaints from Young Pagans stating that Adults are 'Mentoring them' whether they want to hear it or not.
Witchvox is composed on a Mac G5 (OSX Panther) and optimized for the Safari Web Browser. - Pages are spot checked against IE, Mozilla and Opera on a weekly basis.

That First Festival to Now
by Christine Schnell Laplante

It was the day before my first festival. Although I had been calling myself a Witch since I was about 13, I was somewhat ignorant of the wider Pagan world. I knew I liked to be nude and was fairly uninhibited; I romped around the woods, and I called out to the Gods on a regular basis. However, I practiced on my own or with a small group of friends who were mostly there for the show.

I was excited, nervous, and...free. My friend had convinced me that this festival would be good for me. So I found myself in the grocery store checking off the items on the list as we went down the aisles. I believe it started that moment for me. There was a wider world out there to explore and, although slightly apprehensive, I was excited... [Full Article]

Do the Gods Take American Express?
by Liliths Cat

Picture this: A Craft store, like any other; a customer's shopping cart, full of candles, herbs, books and even a statue or two. The customer walks up to the counter and sees a flyer: "Wiccan 1st Degree training and Book of Shadows for only $350.00 - Sign up fast - Spots are limited." The customer pauses and thinks, "Should I put back the statues or pass on the 1st Degree training that I've been wanting?" Then the customer asks the cashier, "Do the Gods take American Express?"*

Can you imagine that happening? Can you picture people selling Wicca, selling initiations, selling degrees and the "rare and elusive" Traditional Book of Shadows handed down from generations through an exclusive line? When, they may say they cannot confirm their lineage as it is "oathbound," but their information is just as valid and real, so sign up and for $350 you too can have the ancient secret knowledge... Working Together
by Raethelyn

As a practicing Pagan in a large metropolis, I am fortunate to have access to a variety of outlets for my faith and interests. I have in the past been privy to the Dallas-Fort Worth Pagan Pride Day festival, the Samhain and Beltane gatherings hosted by the Council of Magickal Arts south of Austin, as well as private functions. The various aspects of the celebrations have ranged in size from just a few close friends to a full-on community gathering. Being a lifelong resident of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I feel I can state with some authority that things have come a long way in the past ten years. If Pagan Pride Day had been attempted back then, there would have been a serious need for police protection, as there certainly would have been protesters at the gates. Here in Texas, people walk around armed as a matter of habit. As it was, the most recent celebration I heard of went off without... [Full Article]

Mysteries - by Spiral Rhythm [Impressions: 342]

We are grateful for permission to post
Spiral Rhythm Live At PSG 2004.

June 23, 2004, Spiral Rhythm performed at PSG. It was a night of pure magic for those who were there. Kerri was targeted by a persistent spirit inhabiting the frame of a (lunar?) moth. We believe this spirit was also the culprit of the first half of the taped show (possibly eaten?) , but saved for posterity is the second half of this marvelous event. “Mysteries” is another fantastic song written by PJ Seale and take... Circles - by Isaac Bonewits [Impressions: 828]

This is a well known song from science fiction fandom filk concerts. I altered some of the lyrics to make them more historically accurate (there I go again!) and not quite so Euro-centric. I really think this is one of the prettiest songs on Real Magic’s first album, “Avalon Is Rising!” Until recently, this was only available on cassette tape, but finally the wonderful folks at ACE have released it as a CD! I still remember sneaking into the studios of a famous New York City rock station, where ... (Go To Performance)

This song came from the wind.. I share it here as a gift from the wind to us. I am honoured you choose to listen.

The Wizard - by Isaac Bonewits [Impressions: 767]

One of my most popular songs, I wrote it because I was sick of "fluffy bunny" Pagans who refuse to actually use their magic to stop evil.... (Go To Performance)

The Fluffy Phase: Just Healthy, Right?
by Crystal Starwolf

"That's right! I'm a Witch! Which means I'm peaceful and tolerant to everyone! YA, THAT'S RIGHT, YOU STUPID CHRISTIAN! MY RELIGION IS BETTER THAN YOURS!"

Makes you roll your eyes, doesn't it? Surely you must have heard young beginning Witches shouting this around with smug looks on their faces. Well I have. Total over-feminist hypocrites who have just gone too far ahead of themselves. Of course I should know. After all, once upon a time, I was one! And strangely, I'm not ashamed to admit it. Because coming out of that phase just made me grow stronger and wiser and become the young woman and Witch that I am today... [Full Article]
