Former T.D. 2 reflares and Alex makes history
Thu Aug 5, 1:44 PM ET
Former Tropical Depression Two, despite westerly shear aloft, experienced a rapid increase in thunderstorm activity during the morning as it heads west-northwestward. Conditions could become more slightly more favorable for development in the next day or so. An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter Aircraft could investigate later Friday. Meanwhile, a small low pressure area between the Cape Verde Islands and the northern Leeward Islands, moving westward at 15 mph remains unorganized with limited showers but could begin to develop over the next few days.

Tropical depression still disorganized
Wed Aug 4,12:30 PM ET
Tropical Depression Two, churning westward into eastern Caribbean this afternoon, remains disorganized. There's still some chance the system could organize into a tropical storm later today, but there's also a possibility it could revert to a tropical wave. Bottom line: there's lots of uncertainty with this system; Hurricane Hunters will continue to ride herd on it. Meanwhile, still-healthy Hurricane Alex (85 mph) is accelerating east-northeastward into the open waters of the Atlantic well south of Long Island and New England. Alex battered North Carolina's Outer Banks yesterday with wind gusts as high as 120 mph and localized severe storm surge flooding (off Pamlico Sound). Elsewhere in the Atlantic, a couple of large clusters of thunderstorms are moving westward well south of the Cape Verde Islands, but show no signs of further development at this time.
