St. Pauls Cathedral Pictures
About St. Pauls Cathedral.. St Paul's Cathedral is the largest cathedral in England and is the masterpiece of Sir Christopher Wren, whos plans were finally accepted in 1675 after much resistance from the conservative Dean and Chapter. The original cathedral was built by Bishop Mellitus in 604AD but burned down in 1087. Old St Paul's was then built, which was a Norman cathedral of stone. Then came the Great Fire of London in 1666 which reduced the cathedral to a burnt ruin. Wren's work then commenced in 1675 and the final stone was laid by his son in 1708.
During the second world war the cathedral suffered slight bomb damage during the blitz of London, when hitler's forces rained bombs on the great city. The cathedrals dome is the second largest in the world at a height of 360ft (110m) and is as spectacular from the inside as it is from the out. If you visit London, St Paul's should be marked high on your list of places to visit. An absolutely stunning piece of architecture.
