The Alaska State Commission for Human Rights proudly celebrated 40 YEARS OF CIVIL RIGHTS LAW IN ALASKA IN 2003.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING

The Commission will hold a brief meeting beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, July 30, 2004.

The meeting will be held in the Commission's office at 800 A Street, Suite 204, Anchorage, Alaska. The Commission will hold its regular meeting October 27-28, 2004, in Soldotna. Details will be provided as the date nears.

WHAT IS THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION?
The Alaska State Commission for Human Rights is the state agency which enforces the Alaska Human Rights Law. The Commission consists of seven persons appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Legislature. The Commission employs a staff and maintains an office in Anchorage. The Commission has statewide powers and accepts complaints from all regions of the state.

ALASKA STATUTE CHAPTER 18.80: STATE COMMISSION FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

ALASKA HUMAN RIGHTS LAW makes it unlawful to discriminate in:
* Employment * Places of Public Accommodation
* Sale or Rental of Real Property * Financing and Credit
* Practices by the State or its Political Subdivisions  

because of:
* Race * Religion * Color
* National Origin * Sex * Physical/Mental Disability

and in some instances because of:
* Age * Marital Status * Changes in Marital Status
* Pregnancy * Parenthood  


WHAT DOES THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION DO?
The Commission staff:

bulletAccepts complaints of discrimination from persons alleging violations of Alaska Human Rights Law;
bulletInvestigates complaints in a fair and impartial manner;
bulletAttempts early settlement of complaints whenever possible;
bulletDismisses complaints when no violation of Alaska Human Rights Law has occurred;
bulletConciliates complaints when Alaska Human Rights Law has been violated;
bulletGives technical assistance and advice on Alaska Human Rights Law; and
bulletConducts workshops and training of employers, unions, landlords, businesses, and others who must comply with the Alaska Human Rights Law.

The Commissioners:
bulletHold public hearings to consider cases where conciliation efforts have failed;
bulletIssue decisions applying Human Rights Law to individual or class action cases;
bulletOrder back-pay, reinstatement, or other appropriate relief to complainants;
bulletOrder the elimination of discriminatory practices; and
bulletEnforce Commission decisions and orders in the Alaska courts.

HOW CAN THE COMMISSION HELP YOU?
If you believe that you have experienced discrimination, you may contact the Commission. The Commission staff will advise you of your rights under Alaska Human Rights Law and when appropriate assist you to file a complaint.

If you need advice about your responsibilities under the Alaska Human Rights Law, the Commission staff can provide information.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT AWARENESS POSTER
AS 23.10.440 requires that employers of 15 or more must post information on sexual harassment in a prominent and accessible location in the work place. This sexual harassment poster can now be obtained by downloading it from the Alaska State Commission for Human Rights' web page.
