In the throbbing heart of Milan, Piazza Del Duomo, situated one of the most prominent landmarks of the city - Duomo Cathedral. Begun in the 1380's on a site where several churches had existed earlier, the building was not wholly completed until 1897. Over a number of years several different architects and consultants (including Leonardo and Bramante) were asked to work on the design. One of the largest cathedrals in the world (14,000 square yards) it was designed to accommodate 40,000 worshippers.
The cathedral is white marble, over a brick core, and has a cruciform plan. The Madonnina, the gleaming gilt statue that tops it, is a symbol of the city. The forest of pinnacles, the tracery panels, and the rich embellishment with statuary identifies it as Late Gothic. Don't miss a trip to the Duomo's roof . Take the elevator, or climb up the stairs to the top and wander around amidst these amazing spires. Views of the city (if air isn't too smoggy). Like Notre Dame, the Milan Duomo is festooned with plenty of gargoyles.
