Edouard Manet (1832-1883) was one of the foremost avant-garde artists of his generation and an important precursor of the Impressionist movement. This exhibition is the first to focus on his marine paintings.

Concurrent with the major summer exhibition of marines by Edouard Manet the Van Gogh Museum will present a display on the theme of Van Gogh and the sea. With drawings, paintings and sketches of his Dutch and French seascapes.

As part of the Preservation of Cultural Patrimony Act, in 1996 the Dutch State acquired the collection of Andries Bonger, which is administered by the Van Gogh Museum. The more than 100 works in this collection were transferred to Amsterdam in phases over the course of several years.
