Located 30 miles west of downtown Chicago on I-88, Naperville is the fourth largest city in Illinois, and also one of the ten fastest growing cities in the United States, with the population increasing from 42,330 in 1980 to 110,107 in the 1996 Special Census. Naperville offers easy access to major interstate highways, O'Hare International and Midway airports.
Captain Joseph Naper first inhabited Naperville, the oldest city in DuPage County, in the winter of 1831. From its farm community beginnings, today, Naperville is known as the high-tech corridor of the Western suburbs. Because of its location, Naperville is home to many engineers, scientists, business managers and other professionals. Diverse high technology, research, and commercial businesses all foster Naperville's continuing growth and expansion.
The downtown area blends historic charm with quaint local shops and national retail stores. The city has preserved some of its history by the creation of the Naperville Historic District in 1977. Parts are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. This area is bounded approximately by Juilian, Highland, Chicago, Jackson, Eagle, and 5th Sts. The historic district includes the North Central College Campus and the Fifth Avenue Station.
Washington Street is a main north-south street within the City of Naperville. There are three distinct destinations spread along its route: I-88 corridor to the north, downtown Naperville in the center, and residential neighborhoods to the south.
Another feature of the city, which is often overlooked, is the colleges and universities. North Central College, DePaul University, Northern Illinois University, College of DuPage and Benedictine University offer outstanding educations. Naperville's hometown college, North Central, has received top marks in the annual rating of Midwest colleges by U.S. News & World Report.
Golfers will appreciate the huge number of courses in the area ranging from small town 9-holers to big city country clubs, which include Michael Jordan's Golf Center and Country Lakes Golf Course.
