Geneva, June 3
High Level Donor's Meetings on the Crisis in Darfur, Sudan
According to the United Nations, the crisis in the western Sudanese region of Darfur is currently the worst humanitarian and human rights catastrophe in the world. The U.N. has estimated that, out of a pre-conflict population in Darfur of 6.5 million, approximately one million people have been internally displaced within Sudan and more than 120,000 people have fled across the border into neighboring Chad as a result of this conflict.

At the meeting, Andrew S. Natsios, Administrator of the US Agency for International Development, announced an additional pledge of $188 Million for the Darfur Crisis -

New HIV/AIDS Drugs Initiative Launched
Tommy G. Thompson, Secretetary of Health and Human Services and Ambassador Randall L. Tobias, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, announced an expedited drug review process at a press conference in Geneva on the day before the 2004 World Health Assembly.
