NIAAA Reviews Neuroscience Portfolio

In May, 1998, NIAAA formed an Extramural Advisory Board of leading scientists in the alcohol research community to review the Institute's portfolio of grants in neuroscience research. Center Director, Fulton T. Crews, Ph.D. and Associate Director, A. Leslie Morrow, Ph.D. participated in this project. Dr. Crews reported on the status of research in the area of the neurotoxicological effects of alcohol, and Dr. Morrow reported on the status of research on adaptations to alcohol exposure. Both scientists identified critical gaps in our knowledge that should be addressed in future research funded by the Institute.

The committee met for three days in Washington, DC and a final report of its recommendations is under preparation by Institute staff. Dr. Crews commented, "It's important for the alcohol research community to review it's progress and goals from time to time. I'm glad that our Center was invited to participate in the process."
