Bluespotted Stingray
(Dasyatis kuhlii)
Other common names:
Kuhl's Stingray.
Identification:
Angular disc without thorns, and a head with short snout.
Grey to sand coloured back with blue spots, and a white belly.
Long tail with black and white rings, and one sting.
Short upper and long lower finfold on the tail.
Temperature range:
21 - 30 Celsius (70 - 86 Fahrenheit).
Typical location:
On deep sandy bottoms near reefs.
Moves to reef flats and shallow lagoons during high tide.
Fishing methods:
Bottom fishing with live or dead crab and shrimp.
Fighting characteristics:
A delicate strike followed by a series of runs along the bottom.
These runs are often separated by short periods of time,
where the ray will burry itself under the sand on the bottom.
