One room that is often neglected during most of the year is the guest room. If you’re planning on having overnight guests within the next year, consider remodeling your guest room to make it more appealing and welcoming. Think about all of the things that make you feel comfortable when staying in someone else’s home. Aim to include any luxuries you can afford and your guests will thank you for it.
Walls and Flooring
First, look at the condition of the walls and carpet (or flooring). Is the paint looking dull? Is the wallpaper outdated? Neutral or warm tones would be the most inviting to guests. If you want to put up new wallpaper, a nice soft pattern with a border keeps it simple. In what condition is the flooring? Is the carpet stained or worn? If so, replacing it with new will change the look of the room entirely. If the carpet is in decent shape but just a little matted down, hire a professional carpet cleaner. If you have hardwood flooring, simply adding an area rug gives a bedroom a warmer touch.
Coordinate Color Scheme
After deciding on colors for the room, try to coordinate comforters, sheets, window treatment, throw pillows, chairs, etc. to match. A unified color scheme looks elegant and makes guests feel almost special to be staying in such a room. Also think about adding a television and/or radio, clock, phone, reading lamps, and anything else a guest might need while staying with you.
Bathroom Access
How is the bathroom access for your guests? Do they have to walk down a long hall to get to the bathroom? If there isn’t a convenient bathroom near the guest room and if space allows, maybe a small bathroom could be added and sectioned off within the room. Granted this would require a larger budget but if possible, your guests will be grateful. Even a half bathroom could be added for extra convenience. This is especially a good idea if your family has many and frequent houseguests. Having a private bath in the guest room allows the guest to feel truly at home.
