Liposuction FAQ: By Jeffrey Berti,
MD
What is
Liposuction Surgery?
Dermatologic surgeons have
pioneered the liposuction techniques utilized to
remove undesired fat deposits from nearly all body areas
including the face, neck, abdomen, hips back buttocks and
legs. Prior to the 1980's, hospital-based surgery
was required to remove significant amounts of fat
deposits. Treatment was often limited to a few
areas, and recovery from anesthesia often prolonged
healing time, as well as provided for additional risks.
What is
Tumescent Liposuction?
Tumescent liposuction
revolutionized liposuction surgery. The technique
refers to the use of local anesthesia by filling the
fatty layer with dilute medications that provide for the
anesthesia effect. Use of tumescent liposuction
allows dermatologic surgeons to safely and efficiently
remove both deep and superficial excess layers of fat
with little discomfort, more rapid healing and superior
cosmetic results.
Potential complications
from general anesthesia are avoided and, since the
patient is awake, he or she is able to sit or stand
during the procedure, allowing the surgeon to check the
status of the patient and procedure and to refine the
progress of contouring.
What happens
prior to surgery?
A complete medical exam is
required, and blood tests are obtained to ensure that
anemia, clotting disorders or potential communicable
infectious diseases are taken care of prior to the
procedure.
What happens
after surgery?
The local anesthesia
injected under the skin remains in place for about 24
hours following liposuction surgery, greatly minimizing
the need for post-operative pain medications. Most
patients are alert and able to fucntion without the need
for recovery as in general anesthesia. In fact,
patients are encouraged to walk immediately after surgery
to enhance the healing process. Many return to full
normal activities in a few days. Physical exercise
is allowed seven to ten days after the procedure.
How do I find
a dermatologic surgeon who performs liposuction?
Contemporary dermatologist
are specifically trained to perform skin associated
procedures such as liposuction. Consult your
dermatologist to find out if they perform tumescent
liposuction. An excellent source on dermatologic
surgery, as well as a profile of dermatologic surgeons in
your area is The American Society for Dermatologic Surgey
amd/or The American Academy of Dermatology.
